The Name Chosen Is Imber Avenue

From The Wiltshire Times & News, Friday 12th March 1982:

Now Imber Avenue Leads To The Gates

The link between Imber Road and the main gates of 27 Command Workshop REME, which for years has remained nameless, is to be called Imber Avenue, the Town Council, Post Office and Army have decided.

The Army’s own suggestion of Beggar’s Bush Road was rejected by the town council not so long ago on the grounds that with only slight alteration some dark night it might offend public morals.

Also discarded along the way were about 50 suggestions from base personnel, among them two pearls.

After all, to honour the present commanding officer , Col. Arthur Wareham, what could have been more appropriate than Wareham Down?

Surely only the Sergeant Major’s favourite – Lettsby Avenue!
