Old-Time Local Games At Maiden Bradley

Ralph Whitlock, in his book Salisbury Plain, published in 1955, writes:

Maiden Bradley also has memories of several old-time local games. Besides traditions of an old mumming-play there used to be a village dance, all details of which seem to have been lost. On Palm Sunday the villagers used to play a ball game on top of Long Knoll. There was another game called Trap, which consisted of trying to hit a ball from the village stocks over a row of houses nearby, a procedure which used to result in many broken windows. Yet another had the intriguing name of Bumball Toopey, but beyond the fact that it was a rather riotous game played in public houses nothing seems to be known about it.
