Geoffrey Grigson in A Gazeteer To Wessex, in the book About Britain No.2, Wessex, A New Guide Book With A Portrait By Geoffrey Grigson, published by Collins in 1951, noted:

Stourhead, Wiltshire. A National Trust property. Palladian mansion, with a fine view to Salisbury Plain and a collection of pictures and furniture, and above all the 18th century landscape garden, with grotto, temples, lakes, etc. Three miles north-west of Mere.
