Prizes At Boys’ British School, Common Close, Warminster, 1889

The Warminster & West Wilts Herald, Saturday 20 April 1889, reported:

The annual distribution of prizes and certificates of the Boys’ British School, Common Close, took place on Thursday morning.

Mr. Lanning gave away the prizes. Appropriate addresses were given to the boys by Messrs. Lanning and Lucas, and Dr. Raby.

An interesting feature was the presentation of a purse of money collected by the boys themselves, to Mr. A.D. Sleigh, assistant master, who is leaving to take a situation in London.

Mr. Sleigh, thanking the boys, alluded to the fact of receiving a present from the boys of the Common Close British School eighteen years ago, when leaving for college, and briefly advised the boys to have a two-fold aim in life – to aim at being clever and aim at being good.

The school then broke up for the Easter vacation.

Prizes were presented to the following boys:

I. Arthur Lee, Harry Churchill.
II. Valentine Evans, William Cane.
III. Frederick Whitmarsh, Spencer Bailey.
IV. Cecil Evans, Ernest Bigwood.
Extra. Edgar Payne, Edwin Spencer.
