A Girls’ Boarding School Was Evacuated From Bath To Longleat House, 1939-1947

Some notes about Longleat during the Second World War, posted on the Facebook page for Longleat (8th May 2020), include:

Longleat House was home to a girls’ boarding school evacuated from Bath (Royal School for Daughters of Officers of the Army) between September 1939 and July 1947.

Bookcases and desks were placed in the Great Hall, dormitories were scattered throughout the House, including in the Saloon, and the wine cellars were used as an air raid shelter.

Queen Mary visited Longleat in 1943 and spent time teaching the schoolgirls how to curtsy properly.

On VE Day lessons were cancelled and in the evening celebrations were held around a large bonfire in the grounds.
