The new retirement living development on the west side of Portway, Warminster – currently being built on the site of the former Woodmead Old People’s Home – is to be called Crescent Place.
The development is not crescent-shaped though and nor is the word (for a phase of the moon) associated with the history of the land adjacent Portway House.
Developer McCarthy Stone said the name has been chosen in homage to the astronomical clocks created in the 18th century by Edward Cockey of Warminster. One of his clocks is now in the British Museum. Astronomical clocks, as well as telling the time, provided a detailed calendar showing the age and phase of the moon and the position of the Sun in the zodiac – with sunrise and sunset times.
Nicki Beswarick, Divisional Marketing Manager for McCarthy Stone Southern, said: “The astronomical clocks created by Edward Cockey were a remarkable feat of engineering and design for the early 18th century. We are delighted to honour the clocks, and their creator, through the naming of our new retirement community.”
McCarthy Stone’s new development, where construction has been underway since last year, will provide 28 one-bedroom and 15 two-bedroom apartments, designed to meet the needs of people over 60 years of age. The development will include a communal lounge for residents, and there will also be garden areas around it. A 24/7 emergency call system and door-camera entry system will help keep homeowners safe, and a House Manager will be on-site during office hours.
Properties are available for outright purchase, rental or to part-buy, part-rent. Properties can be reserved now. Set in the Warminster conservation area, Crescent Place, according to McCarthy Stone, is said to be “the perfect setting for an independent and fulfilling retirement. McCarthy Stone say they have received the full Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation, and that they are the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this rating every year in a survey.
