The Place Names Of Maiden Bradley

Writing in 1932, Victor Strode Manley, as part of his Regional Survey Of Warminster And District, wrote the following notes concerning Maiden Bradley:

The place name [of Maiden Bradley] seems associated with Saxon Maegth, maeden, etc., the place or refuge for the local settlements, and the broadley seems to refer to the important tracks and roads which meet here as their focus.

Other names taken from Warminster Journal, are –

Cadbench Common, The Rank, La Pley Street, The Tyning, West Ham, and the Great Bruron or heather land on the south.

Also – Gare or Gaer Hill, Kate’s or Gate Bench, Penstone Woods, and Penny’s Wood.
