Warminster Drug Driver Jailed For 9 Years After Causing A Fatal Collision On The A350

Thursday 21st December 2023

Westbury Police report:

A drug driver has been jailed for nine years after causing a fatal collision on the A350 in April 2022.

Ben Clough, 31, of Sambourne Gardens, Warminster, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on Thursday (14 Dec) after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs.

On April 4, 2022, Clough was driving along the A350 Yarnbrook in a Range Rover when he crossed the central white lines, colliding head on with a Nissan X-Trail being driven by 69-year-old Robert Godfrey.

Sadly, Robert, from Westbury, died at the scene.

Clough was breath tested and drug tested, returning a positive drug wipe for cocaine, and was subsequently arrested.

Community road safety officer PC Charlotte Sartin said: “Firstly, I’d like to pay tribute to Robert’s family for their courage and bravery throughout this ordeal.”

“On April 4 last year, Clough put many people’s lives at risk by choosing to get behind the wheel while under the influence of cocaine.”

“Unfortunately, his actions led to the death of Robert.”

“Not only that, in February this year while on release under investigation before a charge was authorised by the CPS, Clough was stopped by officers again under the influence of cocaine.”

“Clough’s incredibly reckless and dangerous actions had already led to the death of Robert and it’s shocking to think he willingly chose to drive while under the influence of drugs again.”

“Nothing can bring Robert back but hopefully this lengthy sentence will bring his family some closure and lead Clough to reflect on his actions.”

We are running our Drink/Drug Drive campaign for the entire month of December which sees officers carrying out early morning and late night vehicle checks, targeting individuals who appear over the limit or under the influence of illegal drugs.

Our message is simple: Don’t risk it.

Warminster Town Council Looks Set To Increase Council Tax By 1.7% For 2024/2025

Thursday 9th November 2023

Press release from Warminster Town Council:

Warminster Town Council Looks Set To Increase Council Tax By 1.7% For 2024/2025

The draft budget for Warminster Town Council recommends a well below inflation increase in Council Tax for the 2024/2025 financial year.

Based on figures presented to the council’s Finance and Audit Committee on Monday 6th November, Warminster Town Council’s share of the Council Tax per Band D equivalent property would rise from £212.82 to £216.50, an increase of £3.68.

This represents a change of only 1.73% compared with the current year. As typical properties in Warminster are Band C or below and some households receive discounts, the actual increase for most households would be slightly less.

The exact figures will be confirmed when the final budget goes to Full Council for approval in January 2024, but it is expected that it will be in line with the draft budget.

Councillor Andrew Cooper, Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee said: “People have been through a tough financial time these last few years. I am delighted that we are able to recommend a well below inflation rise for the Town Council’s share of Wiltshire Council’s council tax bill for 2024/2025.

“The Town Council has delivered some major projects at minimal cost to the council taxpayer. This year, for example, has seen a huge upgrade to the CCTV system and the Tennis Courts.

“We are fortunate that the Council has been protected by securing long term fixed rates deals on its energy supplies. We will continue to seek out value for money and provide quality services in the year ahead.”

The Town Council sets only a small part of Wiltshire’s Council Tax; the majority of the Council Tax charged goes to Wiltshire Council, with other sums going to the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Fire and Rescue Authority, and to support adult social care in the county.
