Fairtrade In Warminster

Friday 24th February 2012

People Of All Ages Welcome To Join Warminster Fairtrade Group

Warminster achieved Fairtrade Town status nearly four years ago and held a huge Fairtrade tea party for the town to celebrate.

The town’s Fairtrade Group meets regularly to plan events in the Warminster area to promote the concept of fair trade. With the support of the Town Council, they have worked hard to spread the word. They acknowledge that they are fortunate because the Mayor is a President of the committee and the Deputy Mayor a member.

Warminster Fairtrade Group now has a small Young Supporters’ group from Kingdown School, (the local comprehensive). Three years ago they entered the Warminster Carnival dressed as Fairtrade bananas and won first prize. In 2010, they dressed as Oompa Loompas (remember Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?) and carried a giant bar of Divine chocolate which they had made. They came second in their class. Last year they dressed up as washerwomen and carried a huge washing line hung with clothes made from Fairtrade cotton. What will they do next?

If anyone, of any age, would be interested in joining the Warminster Fairtrade group, they would be delighted to hear from you.

The above details and more can be found on the group’s website: www.fairtradesouthwest.org.uk/group.asp?id=36

Pottery Demonstration By Jo Duggan

Ceramic artist and potter, Jo Duggan of Heytesbury, will be giving a demonstration to the Warminster Art Society, at the Lakeside Community Centre, in the Lake Pleasure Grounds (The Town Park), Warminster, on 21st February 2012, from 2.00 to 4.00 p.m.

Jo Duggan has always been involved with the arts in some way, and has been fascinated by the versatility of clay for nearly 30 years. She is strongly influenced by organic objects such as seedpods, buds, stones and the colours in rock formations. She hand builds some pieces with coils and then scrapes and smoothes until the surface is thin and even. At this stage, she either burnishes the piece ready for the bisque firing; or if she wants colour added, she will brush a coloured slip on the piece, in some cases using a masking tape or wet newspaper as a resist. After this treatment it is ready for burnishing which can take a few hours of rubbing with the back of a spoon, then bisque firing to a low temperature. Then the piece is smoked in a brick box using a variety of combustible materials, such as: sawdust, dried lavender storks, and newspaper. The piece is then polished with a furniture polish. Some of Jo’s smoked pieces are not glazed in any way so are slightly porous; so she does not recommend water be put into them. She also makes a range of traditional kitchen slipware, which are hand thrown on the wheel, and decorated in earthy colours using oxides to colour the slip. The work is then bisque fired as above, and then dipped into a transparent glaze to enhance the slip colours and give a glossy finish.

The demonstration will show something of the process with coloured slips. As time is limited Jo will show how to make a plate using a “hump” mould and will demonstrate the use of slips and resist worked pattern. If there is time, those who want to can try their hand at making a pinch pot.

Admission to Jo Duggan’s demonstration is £1.50 for Warminster Art Society members, and £3 for guests.

Paul And Matt Have Arrived, Maggie Has Left

8th January 2012

Two new nurses joined the staff of the Avenue Surgery, Warminster, during the New Year.

Paul Jones, who has a previous background in community nursing, started at the Avenue Surgery on Tuesday 3rd January 2012. His role will be as an emergency nurse practitioner and he will become the new clinical team leader.

Matt Griffiths is joining the team part-time, as an emergency nurse practitioner, also from 3rd January 2012. Matt worked in a similar role previously.

Both Paul and Matt will be able to carry out home visits as directed by the partnership.

The Avenue Surgery has said farewell to Mrs. Maggie Dettmar, who left the surgery due to retirement in December 2011 after 21 years dedicated service to the Avenue Surgery. Maggie will be returning periodically for clinics at the surgery, so she will still be seen around the practice from time to time.
