Two Inns At Bishopstrow

The Indexed Summary of the Alehouses named in the enrolled recognizances of licensed victuallers, 1747 to 1757. (ref WRO A1/325/8 to 15). BOX 15/9, lists two alehouses and their licensed victuallers at Bishopstrow. One inn is called the Cross Keys and the other has no sign:Cross Keys. Charles West 1754-1757.

No sign. James Allen 1747.

(Lists of people licensed to keep ale houses in Wiltshire do not usually record the signs of the inns. However, for some years during the period 1747 to 1757, signs are recorded for some parishes in the south west of the county, notably those in the hundreds of Warminster, Heytesbury, Mere, Dunworth and South Damerham. Even during the period 1747 to 1757 signs are not always consistently recorded.)

Norway Rats Seen At Bishopstrow

In Chapter XL, “Persons And Things Of Note,’ in his book The History Of Warminster (published 1879), Rev. John J. Daniell, noted:

“30 Dec. 1756. Norway rats were first seen as near to us as Bishopstrow. Before this time we had only a small timid black rat.” (This black rat is the old English native rat, as distinguished from the brown or Norway rat; he is much slighter, and of a jet black colour. Black rats are now very rare in England, being nearly exterminated by the greater weight, strength, and fierceness of the Norwegian species. But the agility of the black rat is marvellous; he is one mass of muscle. Driven before the larger race, he is found only in the higher part of houses, in ceilings, thatch, wainscoatings, and under eaves).
