NOW know ye all that we the said Commissioners Richard Richardson Richard Bloxhan and Thomas Tricker the Commissioners as aforesaid have set out and appointed and by these presents have awarded so set out and appointed the several public and private roads and ways in through and over or by the sides of the new enclosures or allotments to be made by virtue of the said Act in such directions and of such breadths as are here in after mentioned and particularly directed (that is to say) . . . .

[Turnpike Road from Hinton to Deptford]

1. ONE public road of the breadth of 40 feet beginning at the southwest corner of an allotment to the Right Hon. John Lord Hinton Chedworth on the downs and extending from thence in a north-east direction in its usual course to its usual entrance into the parish of Winterbourne Stoke the same being part of the turnpike road leading from Hindon to Deptford.

2. ONE other public road beginning at the north end of the street of the village of Berwick St. James and extending from thence westward of its usual breadth to the northwest corner of the farm croft and from thence of the breadth of 40 feet in or near its usual course the late common field of Berwick St. James until it enters the said down then continuing westward along the north boundary of the down to the southwest corner of an allot ment hereinafter described and awarded to Richard Dawkins and from thence in a straight line westward until it enters the turn pike road leading from Hindon to Deptford towards Amesbury and after passing along the said turnpike road southwestwards about the distance of 700 yards then continuing in a westward direction over allotments to the Rt. Hon. James Malmesbury to its usual entrance into the parish of Wiley at a place called Common Plot the same being part of the public road leading from Berwick St. James towards Warminster.

ONE other public road of the breadth of 30 feet beginning at the west end of Pound Lane in the village of Berwick St. James and extending from thence southwestward in or near its usual course or direction over allotments hereinafter described and awarded to the said Rt. Hon. James Lord Malmesbury and the said John Lord Chedworth respectively to its usual entrance into the parish of Stapleford the same being part of the public road leading from Berwick St. James towards Langford in the said County of Wilts.

ONE other public road beginning at the north end of the street of the said village of Berwick St. James and extending from thence northwestward in its usual course and of its usual breadth between the north crofts and after passing the north crofts then of the breadth of 30 feet by the side of the allot ment hereinafter described awarded to Henry Penruddock Wyndham Esq. the said James Lord Malmesbury John Gilbert William Langley and John Saph and to Mary Parker as lessee under Henry Samuel Biggs to its usual entrance into the parish of Winterbourne Stoke the same being part of the public road leading from Berwick St. James to Winterbourne Stoke aforesaid.

ONE other public road of the breadth of 40 feet beginning on the south side of the said downs about 30 perches west of the old earthworks called Yarnborough Castle adjoining the parish of Langford and extending from thence in a northward direction over allotments on the said downs hereinafter described and awarded to the said James Lord Malmesbury and Richard Coombes respectively to its usual entrance into the parish of Maddington the same being part of the road leading from Langford and Wiley to Maddington.

ONE other road of the breadth of 30 feet beginning at the bottom adjoining Bathhampton Burnbake field and extending from thence northwards over the allotment on the down here inafter described and awarded to the said James Lord Malmes bury for his estate late John Mathans(?) to its usual entrance into the parish of Maddington the same being part of the road leading from Wiley to Tilshead.

ONE public foot road of the breadth of 4 feet branching out of the east side to Stoke road near the northwest corner of the Glebe Croft and extending from thence in or near its usual course or direction over an allotment to the said James Lord Malmesbury near the east end of an allotment to James Saph and Mary Parker respectively to its usual entrance into the parish of Winterbourne Stoke the same being part of the public foot road leading from Berwick St. James to Winterbourne Stoke aforesaid.

ONE private carriage road and public bridle and footway be ginning at the west end of Pound Lane and extending from thence southwards in its usual course and of its usual breadth by the west side of several old enclosures and homesteads in Berwick St. James and by the east side of several allotments in the crofts and after passing the said crofts then of the breadth of 20 feet over an allotment to the said John Lord Chedworth to its usual entrance into the parish of Stapleford, which road and way shall be and forever remain a private carriage road and driftway for the use of the owners and occupiers of land of the said parish of Berwick St. James.

One other private carriage road of the breadth of 20 feet bginning at the northeast corner of Stapleford town and extending from thence northward in or near its usual course or direction over the allotments hereinafter described and awarded to the said John Lord Chedworth James Lord Malmesbury Henry Penruddock Wyndham and George Baker respectively to its usual entrance into the parish of Winterbourne Stoke the same being part of the private road leading from Stapleford Meadows to Maddington farm.

ONE private carriage road and driftway of the breadth of 30 feet branching out of the Warminster road at the southeast corner of an allotment hereinafter described and awarded to Richard Dawkins and extending from thence northward over the said allotment to another allotment to the said Richard Dawkins until it enters an allotment hereinafter described and awarded to Richard Coombes which said road or way shall be and forever remain a private carriage road and driftway for the use of the respective owners and occupiers of the allotments Richard Dawkins over which the same passes and of the said allotment to the said Richard Coombs to which the same leads.

ONE other private road or way of the breadth of 30 feet branching out of the Stoke road at or near the northeast corner of an allotment hereinafter described and awarded to John Gilbert and extending from thence westward by the north end of the said allot ment and allotments to Ann Blowden and Mary Parker respectively and into through and over the allotments hereinafter described and awarded to Thomas Wiles George Baker Samuel Rolfe and the said James Lord Malmesbury respectively into the Warminster Road at the entrance thereof into downs which road or way shall be and forever remain a private carriage road and driftway for the use of the owners and occupiers for the time being of the allotments adjoining thereto respectively.

ONE other private road or way of the breadth of 30 feet branching out of the Warminster Road at or near the southeast corner of an allotment hereinafter described and awarded to the said Thomas Wiles for his estate called Weston and extending from thence northwards through and over the east side of the said allotment until it enters into an allotment hereinafter described and awarded to the said Thomas Wiles for his estate called Carpenters which said road or way shall be and forever remain a private carriage road and driftway for the use of the owners and occupiers of the allotments over which the same passes and of the allotments of the said estate called Carpenters.

According to British History Online “The open fields and much of the downland, a total of c. 1,300 a., were inclosed in 1790 under an Act of 1789.”
