Kelly’s Directory 1848 – Chicklade.

Chicklade is a village in the parish of Chicklade, 16 miles west of Salisbury and 1 mile north of Hindon, in the Hundred of Dunworth and diocese of Sarum. The living is a rectory, value £230, in the gift of the Marquis of Bath; the incumbent is the Rev. John Cooke Faber, B.A. The church has been lately rebuilt in a plain style, without a chancel, and will seat 174 persons; it has a tower, with 1 bell. A Free School is about to be erected. The population, in 1841, was 109. The parish contains 1,039 acres, mostly arable land; it is in the Tisbury Union. John Candy, Esq., is the lord of the manor.

Codford St. Mary, a village on the banks of the Wiley, and on the road from Salisbury to Frome, in the Hundred of Heytesbury and Union of Warminster, distant 7 and a half miles south-east from Warminster, 15 north-west from Salisbury, and 3 and a half from Heytesbury. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, value £306, and in the patronage of St. John’s College, Oxford; the Rev. Geo. Mountjoy Webster, D.D., is the present incumbent. The church is in the perpendicular style of architecture. On the summit of Codford Hill, in this parish, is Ogbury Camp, an earthwork forming a complete circle, and surrounded by a vallum, and fosse, constructed with great regularity. Near it is the supposed site of a large British settlement, covering several acres of ground. There is a place of worship for Independents. The manor belongs to Harry Biggs, Esq., of Stockton House. Population in 1841, 338; area in acres, 1,445.

Codford St. Peter is a parish adjoining the above, and situated in the same Hundred and Union. The living is a rectory, in the archedeaconry and diocese of Salisbury, value £380, and in the patronage of Pembroke College, Oxford. The Rev. Henry Wightwick, M.A., is the present incumbent. A National school-house has recently been erected at the expense of Wadham Locke, sq., of Ashton House, in this parish. Population in 1841, including the hamlet of Ashton, 394; acreage, 1,611.
