Paper Outlines Proposal For A Website To Promote Activities Of Warminster And Two Neighbouring Towns
Tuesday 4th December 2012
The Meeting of the Enterprise Warminster group, held on Tuesday 4th December 2012, at Warminster Civic Centre, discussed the idea of promoting the activities of Warminster and two neighbouring towns, together on one website.
Councillor Robert Fryer (who is also the Mayor of Warminster) has produced a brief paper, outlining such a proposal, suggesting the three towns involved are Warminster, Frome and Tisbury. The paper gives a provisional list of activities currently available in Warminster. Taster sessions could be offered to encourage residents and tourists to attend.
However, the Enterprise Warminster group feels that Warminster, Westbury and Frome would be a better combination in terms of geographical proximity, and suggests too that Warminster could set up a site on its own. The funding of the taster sessions was also of concern. Enterprise Warminster says groups may be more inclined to offer sessions to residents who may take up membership but less likely to want to discount sessions for tourists who would afterwards move on.
Further consideration, it was felt, would need to be given on how to operate the proposed venture, but it was agreed that it would be beneficial for a page to be added to the Warminster Information Centre’s website advertising the activities that are available in the area. Michael Mounde was asked to initiate this, and he and Rob Fryer will compile a more comprehensive list.

Kingdown School Students Told The Town Council What Irritates Them About Warminster
Tuesday 27th November 2012
From the website of Warminster Town Council ~
Six representatives from Kingdown School’s head students attended Warminster Town Council’s Full Council meeting on Monday 19th November 2012 to present the results from a questionnaire they had circulated to every Kingdown student entitled “What irritates you about your town?’
The students, Sarah Gibson, Chloe Hurd, Will Hall, Harry Orchard, Tom Chilvers and Ellis Dackombe, spoke eloquently about the process they had undertaken. They had collated the responses into a report with six main topics: Leisure; Environment; Commerce; Community; Employment and Public Transport, filtering out any unreasonable findings. Litter in town and areas in which young people could socialise, including having access to free wifi, were the main issues that had been raised, along with the desire to update the park and have a road crossing near the school for safety reasons.
The councillors welcomed the approach from the students, and came forward with suggestions of ways in which Kingdown students could become more involved in community issues, including participating in the Wiltshire Assembly for Youth (WAY), Community Area Young People’s Issues Group (CAYPIG), having more involvement in the Youth Centre or even having representation on the Friends of Warminster Park Committee. The students were unaware of the existence of some of the groups, but were interested in finding out more. Councillor Jolley also suggested they could form a Civic Cadet Group under the auspices of the Town Council, undertaking voluntary work within the town for which they could earn credits to use on their CVs.
Councillors proposed that some of the issues the students had raised be dealt with informally, and noted that others, such as having free wifi in Warminster Library, were already being implemented.
The pupils’ desire to have a road crossing in Woodcock Road was commented on by Bill Parks, Head of Services Highways and Streetscene North at Wiltshire Council, who said he would raise this with the Community Area Transport Group for discussion. He congratulated the students on their presentation and the interesting issues they had raised, and also informed them that Wiltshire Council was currently looking at a new contract with regard to litter and the placement of bins, and would be working with the community to look at their requirements.
Councillor Fryer thanked the students for attending and speaking at the meeting, saying they had been a “breath of fresh air’. The councilors asked the Clerk to make the appropriate response to the paper submitted by the students.
Skyfall Over Trowbridge
Friday 23 November 2012
Glenn Head has witnessed something in the sky above Trowbridge. He writes ~
At around 8.00 a.m. on 23rd November 2012, I awoke and opened my bedroom blinds to be presented with a blue sky, dotted with benign clouds. I smiled, wiped the sleep from my eyes and noticed an incongruous gash in the western sky. At first, I thought something had landed on the window, the leavings of a passing bird perhaps, but I was wrong.
I looked closer. I picked up my iPhone, turned on the camera, opened a window and took the shots shown:
I did not see or hear whatever had created the dark line in the sky. I presumed it had only just come into being, because it had not yet dispersed. To me, the mysterious dark gash brought to mind images of something plummeting to the hard Trowbridge earth. I wondered whether there had been a crash, or maybe a part of a plane had broken off unbeknownst to the pilot.
After a couple of minutes the wisps dispersed, the misty mark tilting like the tower in Pisa, before slowly disappearing into the ether.
I turned on the TV to catch the local news. Surely any major air incident would be reported there? But… nothing. So the mystery deepened.
What was it? Had something dropped from the sky? Or could it be that I photographed the remnant of a contrail from an odd angle, itself lit unusually so as to appear numerous shades of grey instead of the usual white?
Who knows? Perhaps we’ll never know? Quite interesting nevertheless.
Do you have any ideas as to what Glenn saw, or do you know for sure what this was in the sky? Let us know at dannyhowell.net ~ email us on dannyhowellnet@gmail.com
