Have your say on Wiltshire Council’s vision for the county

Wiltshire people are being asked to help shape Wiltshire Council’s community-centred draft plan by having their say on the vision for the county over the next decade. Whether you’re a resident, business representative, community group or anyone with an interest in the future of the county and Wiltshire Council services, you can complete a survey and provide your views on the draft Council Plan 2025-35. The survey can be completed here(opens new window). Top tips for supporting your local hedgehogs

Hedgehog populations in Britain have plummeted from 36.5 million in the 1950s to under a million today. This drastic decline is due to habitat loss, pesticide and weed killer poisoning, injuries from garden machinery and road traffic, and overly tidy gardens that lack shelter and food sources. Hedgehogs are vital to the ecosystem, as they eat pests such as slugs, snails, and beetle larvae, and serve as prey for larger animals.

Sustainable Warminster is working to make gardens more hedgehog-friendly.

You can help by cutting a 13cm square hole in your fence to allow hedgehog access (check in with your neighbours first).

  • Avoid using slug pellets and pesticides, which harm hedgehogs directly or through contaminated prey.
  • Provide a safe, quiet space to nest, such as a log pile or hedgehog house and fresh water in a shallow dish.
  • Rewild a corner of your garden by letting grass grow and leaving leaf litter to attract insects.
  • If you spot a hedgehog in daylight and it doesn’t run away from you, it may be unwell – contain it gently and contact a local wildlife rescue organisation.
  • Feeding hedgehogs is fine with appropriate food like hedgehog biscuits or meaty cat food, but never give them bread or milk.

With small changes, your garden can become a safe haven for these essential creatures.

Are you passionate about our town’s rivers and local wildlife? Sustainable Warminster is forming a new committee dedicated to protecting our local waterways.

We’ll be focusing on:

  • Raising awareness of challenges affecting our rivers/waterways
  • Organising hands-on activities such as water testing and collaborating with other working groups
  • Exploring sustainable solutions to help our habitats

If you’re passionate about environmental stewardship, enjoy community collaboration, or simply want to learn more about our rivers, we’d love to have you involved. This is a chance to turn concern into action and help safeguard these precious resources for future generations.

Please contact Amy at press@sustainablewarminster.co.uk if you’d like to join this new working group.

Best wishes,
Rebecca and Amy

Sunday 5th January 2025

A message from We Are Men, Warminster:

How terribly sad that another person has died by suicide. This is the reason why the group WAM – We Are Men was started, to give guys in particular, a safe place to talk, if they want or just be with people that understand without judgement.

Any man is welcome Monday evening 7-9pm at Warminster Town Football club. Don’t have to book or give any details just come along.

Sending love and strength to the family and friends. It’s a difficult journey you face, lots of tears and unanswered questions.

Criticism Of The People Running Warminster Dewey Museum

Wednesday 18th December 2024

On the Facebook page Warminster And District Memories, in reply to a question from David Pollard about the existence of gas lamps in Warminster in the days before electricity came into use for street lighting, Chris Warren has replied that he has a map showing the gas lamp locations and that he gave a copy to Warminster Dewey Museum. But Mr. Warren adds: “Given the people running it [the Dewey Museum] I doubt it [the map] still exists.” Mr. Warren seems to take a dim view of the work of the Honorary Curator and voluntary staff at Warminster Dewey Museum. We wonder why?

Father Christmas Has Started His Warminster Residency

Monday 2nd December 2024

From the Facebook page of Warminster Lions Club:

Father Christmas started off his “Warminster’ residency by visiting with the staff and residents of Longbridge Deverill House & Nursing Home this afternoon.

Safety comes first and he checked his temperature on entering and was found to be a little bit warmer than he was at the North Pole.

Next stop was to see the lovely residents of Homeminster House, where he interrupted their afternoon tea.

We are very pleased to report that everyone visited today made it on to the “nice’ list, which will definitely save on the coal bill this year.

Free Women Self-Defence Seminar

Friday 15th November 2024

A message from Marc at the Wiltshire Grappling Association:

My name is Marc and I’m the head coach of Wiltshire Grappling Academy based here in Warminster and want to give something to the community.

I want to empower women and arm them with some self-defence to be able to feel confident during the winter months ahead.

I always equate it to learning to swim. We learn to make sure we can swim to safety. Why should self-defence be any different?

I am trying to gauge interest so please email me or message us on our social accounts for more information and be added to our waiting list for the upcoming event.

So, share this with your friends, sisters, mothers and daughters and come get involved in learning to protect yourselves.

Many thanks,
Marc, Head coach, WGA+CC.

Warminster Town Council Welcomes Additional Funding For Youth Work In Warminster

Wednesday 30th October 2024

Press release from Warminster Town Council:

Four months ago, Warminster Town Council employed Warminster and Westbury Youth Club to deliver two sessions a week of street based detached youth work. Now, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) has given a grant to double the number of sessions to four a week.

Warminster and Westbury Youth Club manager Beth Mullins said: “We work closely with the neighbourhood policing team, local shops and businesses and Wiltshire Council youth probation services to help support the young people and reduce youth related crime.”

“Over the last four months the detached team has built up some positive relationships with the young people. These relationships have allowed us to be able to defuse situations before any police involvement and it has also led to us working closely with some shops in the town where they have seen a reduction in youth Anti-Social Behaviour with our support and intervention.”

“One of the most prominent achievements for us is that we have seen a reduction in youths jumping on shops roofs. Although we have had some good results there is still work to be done. Through our work with the youth probation service, they have identified the benefit of us having more funding to deliver more sessions to help keep building those positive relationships and deter youth crime in the town.”

“We are pleased to say the OPCC saw the need for this extra work in Warminster and has awarded us funding for the next six months. This will double the weekly street-based sessions we offer taking them to four sessions a week and provide funding for 1-2-1 support to be delivered in schools.”

“Thanks to the support of the town council, the Police and Crime Commissioner and Wiltshire Council the team will now be out every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 17.45-19.45 working with the young people in the town continuing to build positive relationships and deter youth crime.”

A Warminster Town Council spokesperson said: “We are delighted that our initial funding has led to further funding being made available. This is a long-term project, and it is good to see positive early results.”
