Skeleton Army Vies With The Salvation Army At Warminster

1883:

A cutting from the Warminster Herald in 1883,
which reads:

“The Salvation Army have been in Warminster for some months past, but little notice seems to have been taken of them until very recently. At first the ‘army’ confined their efforts to platform orations, but now, as elsewhere, they have taken to parading the streets with a band of ‘music.’ This movement on their part has been taken by the rough portion of the community as a direct challenge, and the gauntlet has been taken up with vigour. A ‘Skeleton Army’ is now formed, which
vies with its opponent – the Salvation Army – in seeing which can make the most noise.”
