South West Regional Group meeting of the Medieval and Later Pottery Research Group

Are you interested in pottery, and what it can tell us about the past?

Hear from a range of pottery specialists from the Medieval and Later Pottery Research Group (MLPRG) as they present the latest research in medieval pottery, and learn about projects underway to inform our understanding of the way people lived in the South West in the medieval period.

There will also be the opportunity to handle archaeological pottery specimens, and view medieval pottery from collections not normally on display from the stores of the Wiltshire Museum, including kiln material from Langley Burrell and Minety, and assemblages from Ludgershall Castle and Devizes.

Over 16s only or accompanied 14-15 year olds please, due to the fragile nature of the archaeological collections.

Date:  23 November 2024
Time: 10am – 4pm
Location: Wiltshire Museum, Devizes.
Cost: Free
Booking: essential (see note below), book online.

This event is organised and run by the Medieval and Later Pottery Research Group, who have allocated a few places to supporters of Wiltshire Museum.

Warminster Man Sentenced To More Than Two Years For Domestic Abuse Offences

Monday 7th October 2024

From the news page of Wiltshire Police:

Owen Coombs

A man from Warminster has been sentenced to two years and four months for domestic abuse offences.

Owen Coombs, 23, of Kings Court, Warminster, was sentenced at Swindon Magistrates Court on Thursday (03/10) for engaging in controlling / coercive behaviour, assault, ABH and possession of a class B drug.

On August 26, 2024, Coomb’s victim reported a theft following a verbal argument. He grabbed her through a window and punched her in the face.

He was sentenced to two years in prison for coercive and control, four months imprisonment for ABH (to run consecutively), 1 month for battery (to run concurrently), and was given a 5 year restraining order.

Coombs was not given a separate penalty for possession.

Local Crime Investigator Amanda Southey said: “Coercive control has a significant impact on a person and often causes long-term adverse effects on their emotional well-being. This can make it harder for a victim to come forward and I would like to thank the victim for their bravery in assisting our investigation.

“Coombs subjected his victim to a series of abusive acts and without the victim coming forward and reporting these incidents to the police, we would have found it difficult to secure the sentence.

“No one should have to undergo any form of physical violence and as a Force, we are here to listen to you and are committed to providing the necessary support to help bring you justice.

“You should never feel alone in such circumstances and in making contact with us, you are doing the right thing.”

You can report crime to us through our website Advice about domestic abuse | Wiltshire Police, or by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.

We also have a list of local organisations where you can get support: Support organisations for victims of domestic violence | Wiltshire Police
