Boreham WI Talk ~ Pam In The WAAF

Friday 28th September 2012

Pam Goodger, who formerly lived at Corsley, prior to moving to her present home in The Close, Warminster, was the guest speaker at the September 2012 meeting of Boreham Women’s Institute. She held her audience captive by relating her experiences in the WAAF. Pam began by reminding everyone who could remember, how calm and peaceful life was before 1939. Pam was just 16 at the time but had a desire to ‘get on’ with her life, with an ambition to learn to drive.

Pam’s first experience of work was with the WVS. A six-week domestic science course gave her a basic training but in 1941 with the arrival of her 18th birthday Pam joined the WAAF. She was sent to Bridgenorth and was there kitted out with the standard issue of uniform – some 63 items – including a haversack to put it all in, not forgetting the large black knickers! Pam then recounted how the recruits were taken on to the parade ground for drill and were ‘barked at’ by a male NCO, who took delight in ordering the women about.

Eventually the sought-after driving training came along, and Pam was in Wales learning to drive a 3 ton, 6 wheeler, left-hand drive lorry, a hearse and a Hillman car. Unfortunately Pam failed her driving test.

She then spent some time in Gloucester, guarding a barrage balloon which managed to break free from its hawser and lumberd away “like an escaping elephant”.

The desired driving test reappeared and this time Pam passed. This was followed by a posting to an RAF station in East Anglia, where she was expected to drive a tractor, towing bombers from their hangars.

One car she had to drive broke down on a runway, having sheared the cottar pin. This meant Pam had to go before the C.O., but rather than a reprimand she was given a commision as a catering officer and sent to London for more courses. Further catering management skills were honed under the tutalage of one of the J. Lyons Company members, this time in Lancashire. These young women were considered sufficiently trained to take the responsibility of organising girls hardly younger than themselves.

Pam Goodger’s talk was well received by Boreham WI. The members found it interesting to remember and learn how rapidly one had to ‘grow up’ in wartime. The RAF was 22% women by 1945 – “how attitudes changed in those few war years.”

Fairtrade In Warminster

Friday 24th February 2012

People Of All Ages Welcome To Join Warminster Fairtrade Group

Warminster achieved Fairtrade Town status nearly four years ago and held a huge Fairtrade tea party for the town to celebrate.

The town’s Fairtrade Group meets regularly to plan events in the Warminster area to promote the concept of fair trade. With the support of the Town Council, they have worked hard to spread the word. They acknowledge that they are fortunate because the Mayor is a President of the committee and the Deputy Mayor a member.

Warminster Fairtrade Group now has a small Young Supporters’ group from Kingdown School, (the local comprehensive). Three years ago they entered the Warminster Carnival dressed as Fairtrade bananas and won first prize. In 2010, they dressed as Oompa Loompas (remember Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?) and carried a giant bar of Divine chocolate which they had made. They came second in their class. Last year they dressed up as washerwomen and carried a huge washing line hung with clothes made from Fairtrade cotton. What will they do next?

If anyone, of any age, would be interested in joining the Warminster Fairtrade group, they would be delighted to hear from you.

The above details and more can be found on the group’s website: www.fairtradesouthwest.org.uk/group.asp?id=36

Warminster Civic Trust – Town Plan – East Street

Friday 1st April 2011

Warminster Civic Trust, in its newsletter, issue number 33, April 2011, referring to the Warminster Town Plan, noted ~

“East Street. East Street is the eastern gateway into the town. It suffers however from a number of rundown buildings and a poor street environment. When combined with queuing traffic that is waiting to negotiate the junction with Station Road, it provides a poor first impression for visitors arriving from the Salisbury direction. Against this background, the extension of the paving improvements in Market Place and the introduction of a one-way system along this area could help to improve the environment. But, perhaps more fundamental, the weak commercial prospects in this part of town suggest a move towards increased residential use of related properties.”

Warminster Civic Trust ~ Town Plan ~ George Street

Friday 1st April 2011

Warminster Civic Trust, in its newsletter, issue number 33, April 2011, referring to the Warminster Town Plan, noted ~

George Street. Many of the buildings in George Street have historic features, although more could be made of them through maintenance and sympathetic renovation. Whilst such moves, along with improvements to shop frontages, will be encouraged, the street environment could be enhanced by making best use of the wide space in this area. Possible ideas include the adoption of chevron  parking, widening of pavements, and the introduction of suitable trees to soften its appearance.

Warminster Civic Trust – Town Plan – South Of Market Place

Friday 1st April 2011

Warminster Civic Trust, in its newsletter, issue number 33, April 2011, referring to the Warminster Town Plan, noted ~

“South of Market Place. Much of the land behind the shops on the south side of Market Place is under-utilised. It offers scope for substantial remodelling with the introduction of a series of attractive interlinked shopping courtyards that build on the success of Chinns Court. It would require the creation of a new access route linking Weymouth Street through to Ridgeway Court. Whilst much will need to be done if such aspirations are ever to be brought to fruition, they provide a thought provoking concept.”

Warminster Civic Trust ~ Town Plan ~ Dents Factory And Fairfield Road

Friday 1st April 2011

Warminster Civic Trust, in its newsletter, issue number 33, April 2011, referring to the Warminster Town Plan, noted ~

“Dents Factory. After the ups and downs of ‘will it happen – won’t it happen’, redevelopment of the Dents’ factory site will begin in the very near future. The new Waitrose store and three other outlets should be a real boon to the town. They will also help to integrate the Fairfield Road development with the centre of the town. It represents a recent victory for us all over the planners who preferred redevelopment of the main car park [Central Car Park] including the demolition of our library.”
