Concerns About Folly Lane, Warminster, 30 MPH Speed Limit

Friday 2nd December 2011

At a Town Development meeting of Warminster Town Council, held on 28th November 2011, residents of Folly Lane voiced their concerns about the current 30 mph speed limit on the lane which narrows to a point where two vehicles cannot pass, has no pavement or street lights and yet is the access to Warminster Rugby Club and therefore has heavy use at certain times during the week. The residents had witnessed several near misses along this stretch of road, which is also widely used by pedestrians and dog walkers. They feared that a serious accident was almost certain to occur if the speed limit were not reduced to 20 mph. The Rugby Club also requested that the passing bays be cleared of leaves and sediment to allow more space, and for two speed bumps to be put in Folly Lane.

Councillors advised residents that they were limited in what they could achieve as these issues came under Highways, which was under the remit of Wiltshire Council. The Town Council could only act as a reference point, and make recommendations to the Community Area Transport Group based on residents’ concerns. However, they would do everything in their power to ensure that these concerns were heard and that the community was helped in whichever ways were possible.

The south western border of the parish is Folly Lane which takes us up to the new town burial ground known as Pine Lawns, opened when Christ Church burial ground became full in the early seventies.
