From The Wiltshire Times, Saturday 21st August 1937:
Bradford-On-Avon. Hawthorn Tree Felled.
Workmen have this week felled and uprooted the large hawthorn tree which has been for many years a picturesque feature of the gardens of Westbury House. We understand this “slaughter” was necessary because the hawthorn was thrusting into and damaging a very beautiful copper beech . . . . The tree was planted 50 years ago by Mr. Rose, at that time gardener to Mr. Spencer, who lived at Westbury House. Mr. Rose is still living in Whiteheads Lane.
