Re-Opening Of The Grosvenor Arms, Hindon

From The Wylye Valley Life magazine, No.24, Friday 19th April 1985:

On The House At Hindon

Although it was April Fool’s Day, there was no trickery in the offer of free drinks for the locals when the Grosvenor Arms in Hindon re-opened. The inn, an old coaching one, has been closed for the few months for redecoration.

The doors were re-opened in style on April 1st with a ribbon strung across the entrance. Proprietor Mr. Christopher Nell joined the new manager and manageress, Alan Douglas Williams and his wife Susan, serving behind the double-sided bar.

Not only did the locals get a free drink of beer or wine and also refreshments, they were able to try the new Hindon Brew, a special from Wadsworths.

Mr. Williams, who is a Hindoner, returned to the village with his wife to take over the management. His grandparents, Ralph and Agnes Tomlinson, cut the opening ribbon at the doorway and Ralph announced that it was 42 years since he supped his first pint at the Grosvenor.

The pub has seen a total redecoration, carpetting, and new furniture, and plans for a new kitchen and toilet facilities are in hand.

Hindon Parish Council Ask MP About Drugs

From the Wylye Valley Life magazine, Issue No.23, Friday 5 April 1985:

Members of Hindon Parish Council have decided to ask Mr. Robert Key, the Salisbury Conservative MP, to press for a revision of some of the proposals in the Government’s new drug laws.

Council members are concerned that people in rural areas will be effected by the limit to be made on the range of drugs that can be prescribed under the National Health Service.

Members of the Council feel that the new proposals will effect those living in scattered country communities, who are unable to get to chemist shops easily.

Hindon Parish Meeting, March 1985

From the Wylye Valley Life magazine, Issue No.23, Friday 5 April 1985:

The Hindon Parish Meeting which was held last month was attended by County Councillor John Underwood who announced that he would not be standing for re-election. He was thanked for all the help he had given during his time in office.

Major repair work to the road in The Dene was scheduled by Wiltshire County Council for the current financial year but the County Surveyor had said that the provision of footways on the B3089 between Quoins and the Old Police House and also at Stop Hill could not be included in the present programme due to the general curtailment of funds.
