Bugley Barton Accommodation Underpass
This structure provides a bridleway and farm accommodation track [Pound Lane] under the Bypass. The width of the track through this structure is 5.5 metres and it has a height of 4.75 metres to provide clearance for farm vehicles. The structure consists of a reinforced concrete box having equal thickness floor, walls and roof of 600mm. The ends have reinforced concrete splayed wing walls integral with the main box structure. The structure has partial construction joints midway along its length and at each wing wall extension. In each joint the steel reinforcement is continuous, the concrete is keyed and the joint sealed from water ingress by an external plastic waterstop and a sealant on the inside. Aluminium parapets are provided behind safety fences as a further precaution.
Extract from The Changing Face Of Warminster by Wilfred Middlebrook, published in 1971:
The name Bugley is sometimes attributed to a fairy origin, though anything less fairylike in sound than “Bugley’ would be hard to imagine. “Bugge’ is a spirit or ghost, and there is the North Country expression “boggart,’ meaning a fearful ghost. If Manley’s folklore is anything to go by, there were boggarts in plenty at Bugley in olden times. In Domesday the name is Bogelygh, Buggel in 1256, and Billeh in 1344; today it is plain Bugley, with modern bungalows mushrooming along the sides of Victoria Road to make of it a pleasant suburb of Warminster.
Extract from The Changing Face Of Warminster by Wilfred Middlebrook, published in 1971:
Hog’s Well is at Bugley. This was a spring that was once noted for healing weak eyes. It is joined by a brook from Cley Hill, and by other streams before it enters the town of Warminster at the Obelisk to join the Swan River. It is a fact that many mothers have taken their children to Hog’s Well to bathe their eyes, and farmers with a weak pig in a litter, would let the piglet stand in the spring for fifteen minutes; this may well be the origin of the name Hog’s Well. Victor Manley relates a fantastic story of the Hog’s Well demons, who would rise out of the ground and seize anyone found wandering near the well. The unfortunate yokel would then be dragged underground, forced to repeat certain unspecified words, before being given money and released.
Writing in 1922, in his Notes On Some Surnames, Victor Strode Manley stated:
“SELF – A Bugley [Warminster] family.”
From The Parish Magazine, January 1903:

Our new postmaster, Sergeant-Major Hirst, of Bugley, Warminster, will enter upon his duties early in this month, and we are very pleased to be able to add that satisfactory arrangements are in the course of being made through the District Council to give the necessary guarantee required by the post office authorities for bringing the telegraph wires to our village.
