Former Mayor Presents Over £2,600 To Two Local Charities

Wednesday 18th June 2025

Press release from Warminster Town Council:

𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐥𝐥𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐛𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 £ðŸ,𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬.

Former Mayor of Warminster, Cllr Stacie Allensby, has been delighted to present her charities for 2024 to 2025 with more than £2,600, following a successful year fundraising across the town.

Cllr Allensby’s two chosen charities were Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity and the Westbury and Warminster Youth Club, who were both presented with cheques of £1,341.51 after £2683.02 was raised in total during her mayoral year.

Cllr Allensby said: “I’m really pleased to raise more than £2,600 during my year as Mayor. I thank all my local councillors for their help at various events throughout the year as well as the residents of Warminster for their generous support.

“I chose Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance because of the amount of amazing work they do across Wiltshire, and I know probably more people than I should that have needed their assistance.

“I supported the Westbury and Warminster Youth Club as I’m passionate about youth work and there just aren’t enough facilities for our youngsters at the moment, compared to what I had when growing up – we are seeing youth clubs disappearing.

“The detached youth work provision is doing an amazing job, and I want to keep initiatives like that running.”

The Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity is a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) which provides vital critical medical care by land and air, across Wiltshire and Bath.

The Westbury and Warminster Youth Club works with young people for two hours an evening, four evenings a week all year round, working with schools, Wiltshire Police and other agencies.

The team helps develop resilience to youth offending and anti-social behaviour, as well as providing the young people of Warminster with an outlet for some much-needed fun.

Cllr Andrew Cooper, Town Mayor for the 2025-26 municipal year, will support local charities Mind and Open Door Warminster.

Councillors Visit To Wessex Water Construction Site At Weymouth Street, Warminster

Sunday 15th June 2025

Bill Parks (Warminster Town Councillor – Warminster North & Rural) writes:

With the planned road closure of Weymouth Street over the coming days to progress construction of the storm water storage tank, I thought that I would arrange a site visit with Cllr Andrew Davis to view the extent of the works.

Wessex Water are investing of more than £1.8 million which will see an additional 407,000 litres of storage built underground within the existing car park at the northern end of Weymouth Street to help improve the quality of water in the River Were running through the town.

Having trained professionally as a civil engineer I was interested to learn more about the complexity of the problems – the size and depth of the shaft is impressive!

Alistair Garrett Was A Great Drummer, A Good Friend And A Lovely Man

13th June 2025

Sad news from the Crash Gears:

It is with great sadness that the Crash Gears mourn of the passing of our original drummer Alistair Garrett. When the band formed in 2015 Al was the vital link that brought Tom Hiscocks and Pat Kirwan together with James Leighton and Martin and Tom Noke in the Organ Inn for what was to be the band’s first meeting. He arranged our first rehearsal. From the beginning Al (some called him Ally) brought his decades of experience to make the band swing in a way that only years of playing can make possible. He was able to play tight but allow that element of swing that makes a band come alive. He had such a feel for his kit that he played with his eyes closed for most of the time. For Al it was all about feel and he played with smile on his face. We played many great gigs together and those gigs with Al in the engine room will live long in the memory for us. Here he is playing tight and loose at the same time back in 2016. Farewell Al, a great drummer, a good friend and a lovely man.

For those that wish to attend Alistair’s funeral, it will be held at The Chapel in Horningsham at 13:30 on Monday 23rd June and afterwards at Horningsham Hall.

Warminster Aims For Wessex Water Watermark Town Status

Tuesday 10th June 2025

Press release from Warminster Town Council:

Warminster aims for Wessex Water Watermark Town status.

Warminster Town Council and Wessex Water are working with local community groups to achieve recognition of Warminster as a Watermark Town.

Watermark Town status is an award that recognises where shared environmental and social goals have been met, with an emphasis on the town’s water usage and what happens to rain and wastewater that ends up in drains and sewers.

Wessex Water has developed the initiative following trials in Chippenham and Bridport, both of which became Watermark Towns in 2024.

Two initial meetings have been held in Warminster, hosted by the town council. Amongst the top concerns were the need to take steps to reduce surface water flooding and to protect the delicate environmental balance of the local chalk streams and rivers.

Chalk streams are fed by underground aquifers, which means the water is naturally filtered and clear. These very rare geological feature are very precious. Only 200 chalk rivers are known globally, 170 of which are found in the UK in southern and eastern England.

The group agreed that the following initiatives should be undertaken in the first year of the Watermark Award scheme:

Raising Awareness Activities

• Save water, save money – tips on how to save water and cut your water bill

• Bin the wipe – Encouraging people to stop putting wet wipes in toilets as they can end up blocking pipes

Taking Action Activities

• Rain savers – installing water butts to help reduce rainfall run-off pilot scheme

• Water audits – installing water saving interventions to reduce water use at council and community buildings

• Only rain down the drain – supporting the National Yellowfish Campaign, painting yellow fish symbols by drains to raise awareness of which drains lead directly to rivers and waterways

• Education – signing up local schools for a free talk on the topic

Amongst the group involved are: U3A, Warminster Health and Wellbeing Forum, Sustainable Warminster, Warminster Toad Patrol, Friends of Warminster Rivers, Grovelands Countryside & Wildlife Group, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Wessex Rivers Trust and Warminster Town Council.
