Bequests Left By Mr. Joseph Pocock

From The Warminster Parish Magazine And Church Register, No.10, Vol.4., October 1867:

The following bequests have been left by our respected townsman Mr. Joseph Pocock, of Church Street, who died at the advanced age of ninety-three, to various charitable institutions of the town and neighbourhood: The Salisbury Infirmary £100; Bath United Hospital £100; Salisbury Church Building Society £100; Wilts Friendly Society £200; Warminster National Schools £30; Warminster Aged Poor Society £50; Warminster Blanket Lending Society £50.

Opening Of Lecture And Class Rooms At Common Close Chapel, Warminster

Advertisement in The Warminster Miscellany And Local Advertiser, issue dated 1st June 1863:

Common-Close, Warminster.

On Wednesday, the 10th June 1863, the new Lecture And Class Rooms will be opened for Infant and Bible Classes and Devotional Meetings.

The Dedication Services will be held in Common-Close Chapel, at three o’clock in the afternoon and at seven o’clock in the evening; when Prayers will be offered by neighbouring Ministers, and Discourses will be delivered by the Rev. Samuel Martin, of Westminster Chapel, London.

Tea will be provided in the large School-room at 5 p.m.

Tickets, One Shilling each, and half-price to Children in the Sunday-School.

On the following Lord’s Day, June the 14th, Sermons will be presented in the same Chapel by the Rev. W.H. Dyer, of Argyle Chapel, Bath.

Collections will be made on both days in aid of the cost incurred in the erection of these Buildings.

Amusing Entertainment At The Athenaeum Hall

The Warminster Miscellany, 1 November 1862, reported:

On Thursday the 30th ult., Mr. Sam Cowell, assisted by Miss Wright, Mr. Gough, and Mr. Hicks, gave their celebrated and amusing entertainment in the Athenaeum Hall, to a crowded audience. Mr. Cowell assumed various characters, and sung several comic pieces with his usual inimitable effect; it would be difficult to single out any piece for particular notice, as he was welcomed each time of his appearance on the platform by universal cheers, as were also those who assisted him.

Notice! Notice! A. Lucas begs to announce to the inhabitants of Warminster and its neighbourhood, that he has removed to the Premises opposite the Wilts and Dorset Bank, and has added the Woollen Drapery, Ready-made Clothes and Hats, &c. to his business. 

A. Lucas has just returned from the London and Manchester Markets, with a New Stock Of Goods, which for cheapness shall not be surpassed by any other House in the Trade.

A small part of Fancy Drapery Stock, not cleared out, to be sold at a Great Sacrifice.

Rehobath Cottage And Field To Let, Michaelmas 1861

From The Warminster Herald, Saturday 14th September 1861:

To be let from Michaelmas next, 1861. Rehobath Cottage and Field.

The above newly-erected and convenient cottage, together with a large shed and yard, and field, measuring altogether between six and seven acres, situate at Warminster Common and bound by the Frome Turnpike Road. The land is remarkably well adapted for a Market Gardener. Two acres of good clover field may be entered immediately, the remainder, which is in mangold, carrots, parsnips and turnips, may be entered on as soon as the crop is cleared.

To view, apply to William Daniell, at the cottage, whereby by arrangement, Mr. Fisher, the owner, will meet any party wishing to treat for the same.
