Scouts’ Camp At Boreham Equipped With Wireless

From The Wiltshire Times, Saturday 10th August 1912:

Warminster. Scouts’ Camp Equipped With Wireless.
Fifty Boy Scouts of Warminster and Westbury, in charge of Scoutmasters T.F. Fox and G.G. Hoare, are in camp in a field at Boreham. They had a rather damp experience, with heavy rain, for the first three days . . . . . . Their camp is equipped with wireless telegraphy, by which they have been able to communicate with a Scouts’ camp at Freshford.

Melville Cottage, Boreham, Warminster, Was A Boarding House At The Time Of The 1911 Census

At the time of the 1911 Census (2nd April) Melville Cottage, 34 Boreham (later renumbered as 146 Boreham Road, Warminster, BA12 9HB) was in use as a boarding house run by Frances Ella Freeman.

The 1911 Census records that Frances Ella Freeman was the head of the household, was aged 53, a widow, and her occupation was a lodging house keeper in business on her own account. Her place of birth was Bishopstrow, Wiltshire.

Also at Melville Cottage, recorded in the 1911 Census, was Jessie Agnes Priddle, aged 23, single (not married), born at Bromley, Kent. She is a domestic assistant.

Three lodgers are recorded. They are:

Olive Mary Nation, aged 31, single, a teacher in a private school, born Bristol, Somerset.

William Henry Soffe, aged 22, single, clerk traveller, born Maldon, Essex.

Benjamin Buckler, Son Of Thomas Buckler Of Boreham Manor, Warminster

Rev. John Jeremiah Daniell, in The History Of Warminster, published in 1879, referring to Persons And Things Of Note, wrote:

Benjamin Buckler, D.D., Fellow of All Souls’ College, Oxford, and Keeper of the University Records, was son of Mr. Thomas Buckler, of Boreham Manor. He was the author of “Stemmata Chichellanea,” and other learned works. He died at his Rectory house of Cumnor, Berks, in 1780.

And Also one Tenement lying and being in Bourton otherwise Boreham within the parish of Warminster aforesaid with a Curtilage and Garden to the same tenement adjoining containing by estimation one rood, then or late in the tenure of Alexander Pierce or his assigns, adjoining to the Highway on the East part, to the land late of the Lord Audley on the South part and on the West part, and the lands of the Heirs of Alexander Staples on the North part.

Henry Ball Absent From His Service As An Apprentice

From The Warminster Herald, Saturday 29th November 1873:

Henry Ball was charged by Mr. Benjamin Parsons with absenting himself from his service as an apprentice at Warminster, on the 24th November. Mr. Parsons stated that defendant was at work at Boreham, on the day in question, and never returned to work after dinner, but had spent the afternoon at the “Yew Tree.” He also referred to the previous conduct of the defendant. On the 1st October, 1872, he was before the bench, when defendant expressed his sorrow and promised not to offend again. Fined £1 and costs or 14 days’ hard labour.

Caution To The Public

From The Warminster Herald And General Weekly Advertiser For Wilts., Somerset & Dorset, Saturday 2nd August 1873:

CAUTION TO THE PUBLIC.
WHEREAS, much damage has lately been done to the grass growing in the Boreham Meadows, in the occupation of Mr. PHIPPEN, by boys who go to the meadows to bathe, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that any person found committing such damage in future, or found in any way interfering with the Water Hatches there, WILL BE PROSECUTED. Parties are at liberty to go through the meadows to the river for the purpose of bathing, provided they keep to the one beaten path.

Charles Bray and Thomas Lewis, apprentices, of Warminster, were summoned at the last Petty Sessions for having committed damage to the grass in the said meadows, but the summonses against them were withdrawn on their paying all costs, and agreeing to make the following public apology for their offence and misbehaviour towards Mr. Phippen:-
