A watercolour by James Mallard William Turner which has not been seen in public for 30 years is featured in a fascinating new exhibition ~ The Art of the Garden ~ at the National Trust’s Stourhead Gardens, near Warminster.
The painting, The Gothic Cross Above The Lake At Stourhead, has been stored in the Tate archives since 1974, and is now reproduced for the Stourhead exhibition which explores the way artists have been inspired by Henry Hoare’s gardens.
The exhibition also includes works by the 17th century classical landscape painter Claude Lorrain, as well as sketches by John Constable, paintings and sketches by John Piper, watercolours by Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, and pictures by Adrian Berg.
The Art Of The Garden continues until the end of August 2004 and is a must for all garden and art lovers. Further details by telephoning 01985 843601.
