From Doorstep Walks, No.5 The Cross Inn Walk, published jointly by Wiltshire Health Promotion Service and Salisbury District Council, 1999:
Tisbury has five flourishing inns. On this walk you can see three of them. The Cross Inn is believed to be over 200 years old. It was until recent times an unlicensed cider house. The Bennett Arms was built in 1875 by Archibald Beckett, a local speculator, who also developed the High Street area and the brewery in Church Street. The Boot Inn was certainly an inn by the mid 18th century. The phrase ‘Benett and Independence’ engraved in its stone front was the political slogan of John Benett, a prospective member of Parliament.
