St. John’s Churchyard, Tisbury

From Doorstep Walks, No.2 The Oddford Brook Walk, published jointly by Wiltshire Health Promotion Service and Salisbury District Council, 1999:

The famous yew tree in the churchyard is estimated to be 4,000 years old. In the 1950s, on the advice of Kew Gardens, cement was added to the centre to save the tree from splitting apart.

The graves of Rudyard Kipling’s parents, who lived in the village, can be seen at the east end of the churchyard.

The south western corner of the graveyard is left to grow wild as a conservation centre.
