THE LENT WALK
The combination of a blizzard just at the time when people might have been deciding whether to take part and the no dogs stipulation (due to concerns about Alabama Rot) were both factors in reducing the numbers attending to about 10 die-hards.
A few more met at the start for coffee in the church and, after a “break out’ from the labyrinth in the churchyard extension, the walkers continued to enjoy each other’s company during a circular walk along Back Lane and on down to the Wylye where, by kind permission of Roz & Alex Walker, they were able to walk beside the river and into Trench Ground field.
From there, courtesy of the access granted by Laura & Tom Hutchinson, they walked up through the fields to St Leonard’s old church. We were lucky to have Brian Russell with us, who shared his knowledge of the old water meadowsn infrastructure and also introduced the group to his cows that graze there.
As an added bonus three Geocaches were found en route. However, for many of the walkers the best find was the warmth of the Woolpack afterwards! Donations were collected for the charity Alzheimer’s Support, which is setting up a new centre in Warminster.

An email from Danny Howell to Philip Clark:
Hello Philip,
At this year’s ANZAC Service at Sutton Veny you asked me if I could verify something you had read (but forgot where) about a fight involving soldiers at Sutton Veny which resulted in the soldiers having to be separated.
Could it be that you read this in Gertrude McCracken’s booklet Looking Back On Seventy Years Of Sutton Veny, published in June 1981?
The last paragraph on page 17 reads:
“The British troops were eventually moved out of the village and the Australian soldiers moved in. Around the same time, soldiers from Canada and New Zealand moved in to Codford and the Wylye Valley. Not long after they arrived a fight started between all three nationalities near Pine Cottages on the Tytherington road. Two men were killed and it was rumoured that forty had been injured. The New Zealanders were then moved onto Salisbury Plain and the Canadians transferred elsewhere.”
Regards, Danny.
Philip Clark has replied –
Thank you, Danny. You’re a STAR!
Regards,
Philip.

David Hobbs, of Haycombe Hill Farm, Sutton Veny, was fined £9,000 at Salisbury Magistrates Court on Monday 17th October 2016, for failing to comply with health regulations and failing to improve the condition of the water supply fed from a borehole on his land. Wiltshire Council had taken him to court for providing unsafe drinking water, after a risk assessment was carried out which identified several defects with the supply. Water storage tanks did not have vermin-proof lids, allowing open access to contaminate the water supply. Bacteria, including E Coli, were detected, indicating that there had been faecal contamination of the water supply.

Hello Mr. Howell,
I am trying to find some information on the 19thC friendly society in Sutton Veny, known as the “Whitsuntide Club’.
A couple of weeks ago an example of the brass emblem carried by the members on the annual feast day came up for sale on e-bay.
I have an example of the brass but my interest was roused by the fact that, as far as I could make out, this brass was on its original pole!
Needless to say that not too many of the original wooden poles have survived the passing of the decades. I should point out that my bid to buy it was unsuccessful.
Do you have any information concerning the old Club? Dates of formation and winding up, did they have ribbons and if so what colour were they, what was the colour of the pole and was it decorated????
I know the Club met at the Bell Inn and that they may have purchased their brasses in around 1861.
I have contact with Helen Taylor and her last e-mail had an attachment from your book, ‘Wylye Valley —-‘. The photograph of the group parading with a banner, in about 1910, could easily be of the local Friendly Society. However, as there are no poles and brasses in sight it could be that the old Club had been superseded by one of the national fraternal societies, Oddfellows, or Foresters for example. Many of the village/parish Clubs suffered this fate.
Any information you may be able to give me would be most welcome, and appreciated.
Regards. Phillip Hoyland. Burnham on Sea, Somerset.
