Sutton Veny Link With Mary Poppins

Saturday 13th April 2024

Danny Howell writes:

Terry Cross (born 1942), who lived lastly at The Teasels, Warminster, told me a few years ago of an interesting chance encounter he had. Terry related to me that on a trip to London (he didn’t say when) he did his usual thing of going into bars and pubs, talking to people. He recalled how in a pub (he didn’t name it) he got talking to a man who was about three years older than him. The man asked Terry where he come from. Terry’s response was “I’m from Wiltshire, but you won’t have heard of the village where I grew up.” The man said: “Tell me, I might know it.” Terry replied: “I doubt you will know it.” The man said: “Tell me anyway.” Terry responded: “Sutton Veny.” Terry parents Fred and Vera (Alfred Cross and Vera Cross, nee Davis, married in 1941) had lived at High Street, Sutton Veny.

To Terry’s amazement the man said: “Oh I know it. I have good memories of it. My mother used to visit there for short holidays and during her stay she would call on people in the afternoons and have tea with them, during which time I was left to occupy myself in other ways. I would wander on my own about the village, looking over garden fences and walls, walking the lanes, making discoveries in hedgerows, and exploring the fields and the woods.”

It turned out that the man Terry met in the pub was Camillus Travers, and his mother was P.L. Travers, the author of the Mary Poppins books. Camillus, born on 15th August 1939, was one of three sons born to Nathaniel Marlow Hone and Bridget Anthony. His birth name was John Camillus Hone and he had a twin brother called Anthony Hone. (The other brother was Joseph Hone, born in 1937). Pamela Lyndon Travers (born Helen Lyndon Goff, 9th August 1899, Maryborough, Queensland, Australia) when she was 40, went to Ireland and adopted Camillus. She said it was on the advice of her Californian astrologer that she only adopted Camillus and not also his twin brother Anthony. Camillus was unaware of his parentage and real family until he was 17, when his twin brother Anthony unexpectedly met him in a bar in London. Anthony had been brought up by his grandparents.

Pamela died in 1996. Camillus died in November 2011.

Terry Cross died on Wednesday 28th July 2021.

I suppose a logical question for readers of this blog/website is who was Pamela Lyndon Travers calling on and having tea with in Sutton Veny? Does anyone know? Anyone with information please email dannyhowellnet@gmail.com

Heytesbury & Sutton Veny Cricket Club Seeks Funds To Keep Their Ground At Heytesbury Park

Saturday 5th August 2023

Heytesbury & Sutton Veny Cricket Club (HSVCC) statement:

Heytesbury & Sutton Veny Cricket Club seeks funds for ground premises.

Heytesbury & Sutton Veny Cricket Club (the Club) is saddened to report that landowner Heytesland Limited has issued a termination to the License Agreement allowing the Club to play cricket on their current ground on Heytesbury Park.

This vital local resource, where a recent junior training session saw over 100 children take to the field in on a Sunday morning, has steadily expanded its offering into the community over the years. It now has over 150 playing members ranging in age from just 4 to over 70 years. There are active teams at under 9, under 11, under 13, social adults, women’s only, and men’s league cricket.

Justin Wagstaff, chair of the Club said “What we need are funds to help keep the home of our club. We are already receiving advice locally from Wiltshire Cricket Limited as well as the England and Wales Cricket Board at the national level. Support from both the village and local cricketing communities has been flooding in, and we would welcome any further financial and professional help from the local and cricket community so the Club can continue its journey”.

The Club originally dates back to around 1870. In 1933, Siegfried Sassoon purchased Heytesbury House and his passion for the game saw the Club evolve into something more formal. The last twenty years has seen the Club become an important part of the village and wider community. The membership includes third generation players who’s grandfathers played with Sassoon, as well as families where Mum, Dad and the children all play cricket at the Club. The bypassing of the A36 created an island of nature, that has been enjoyed for generations by local residents and is also home to Heytesbury Football Club.

At this time, the Club wishes to thank the Family, Trusts and the Landowner for allowing cricket to be played on the Park; an historic ground and one of the most picturesque in West Wiltshire.

Sutton Veny C of E Primary School Celebrates Latest Ofsted Results

Sutton Veny CofE Primary School Celebrates Latest Ofsted Results

Delighted pupils, staff and the wider school community at a Wiltshire primary school are celebrating after a successful Ofsted inspection.

Sutton Veny CofE Primary was visited by Ofsted in March, with the inspection team assessing the overall effectiveness of the school as ‘Good’. The school’s early years provision was singled out for particular praise, with inspectors rating it as ‘Outstanding’, which is the highest accolade that inspectors can award a school. The Ofsted report highlighted how the children thrive in the early years and get off to a flying start in the reception year.

The report also highlighted how school staff support pupils’ personal development with an enrichment curriculum, which sees children from across the school participate in an array of activities including falconry, yoga and voice tuition.

Ofsted further praised the school for making reading a priority, while staff were commended for meeting the needs of children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

The behaviour and well-being of pupils was also recognised, with the report outlining how staff ‘successfully support’ pupils to understand their emotions and become ‘responsible individuals’. Both parents and the children say that the school is like one big family.

Headteacher, Mr Adam Lewis, who has worked at the school for nineteen years and became the headteacher in 2021, said, “The outcome of our recent inspection is testament to the dedication, commitment, and continued hard work of the whole school community. As a school, we are always on a journey of continuous improvement and it was reassuring that the school has received the external validation that it deserves, particularly after waiting sixteen years since our last Ofsted inspection.”

Sutton Veny is an inclusive Church of England Voluntary Controlled school with 163 children currently on roll. The school prides itself on delivering a caring, happy and safe environment in which every child can thrive and reach their full potential.

To find out more about the school, or to arrange a tour, please contact the school office, or visit www.suttonveny.wilts.sch.uk
