Peace Memorial Bungalows, South Newton

Monday 2nd January 2023

From the website of South Newton and Stoford Parish Council:

Peace Memorial Bungalows – South Newton

Something you may not know about South Newton – it has 2 Almshouses.

These 2 bedroomed bungalows were built in 1946 and are managed by the Salisbury City Almshouse and Welfare Charities (Registered Charity No: 204483) with 5 voluntary Trustees drawn from South Newton residents.

Almshouse residents make a contribution towards the cost of maintenance and are responsible for utility bills and council tax. The weekly maintenance contribution is eligible for Housing Benefit, thus ensuring that no one need be financially embarrassed on becoming an almshouse resident.

The criteria for occupation are:
Have been born in or a resident of South Newton for at least 10 years.
Be of good character with a low income

Currently, both Almshouses are occupied.  When a vacancy occurs it will be initially advertised on this website and in the Parish Magazine.  Should there be no response then further advertisements will be placed in Valley News and the Salisbury Journal.  Exceptionally, if no South Newton resident applies or is deemed suitable, then applicants from a wider area may be considered.

Fulling At South Newton (Wiltshire And Somerset Woollen Mills)

K.H. Rogers, in Wiltshire And Somerset Woollen Mills, published by the Pasold Research Fund Ltd., in 1976, noted:

South Newton
In 1814 two pairs of fulling stocks on a good stream at South Newton were advertised to let. They no doubt stood in the corn mill, as is suggested by an earlier reference (1720) to a miller and fuller in the village.
