A Second Person Has Died – Continued Appeal For Witnesses To RTC At Knook

Friday 6th June 2025

Update From Warminster Police:

A second person has died following a road traffic collision on the A36 on Saturday (31/05).

At around 10.30am, a car and three motorcycles were involved in a collision at Knook.

One of the motorcycle riders, Robert Best, 62, from Bradley Stoke, was sadly declared dead at the scene. His family paid tribute to him in a statement earlier this week, describing him as being “loved and adored by all who knew him”.

Sadly, a second person – a woman in her 60s – who was riding pillion on a different motorcycle to Rob and suffered serious injuries in the incident has died in hospital.

Her next of kin are aware and our thoughts are with them at this sad time.

We continue to appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage of the incident as our enquiries continue.

If you witnessed the collision, and we haven’t yet spoken to you, please contact Wiltshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 101 of May 31.

Information Sought About The YB Gardens

Sunday 21st April 2024

Danny Howell writes:

Part of my childhood was in the 1960s and a name I recall from that time was a place called the YB Gardens. It was situated on the south side of the A36 road, just as the road levels out after climbing the winding bends on leaving Knook. Alongside the road there was a parish boundary marker (made by Carson and Miller) indicating the boundary between Knook and Upton Lovell. A footpath, with the name Guernsey Path, connects the north-western end of Ash Walk, Upton Lovell, with the A36, and the YB Gardens were in close proximity to where Guernsey Path met the A36.

I know little about what was the YB Gardens and have always presumed it may have been a plant nursery or had some gardening or horticultural connection. The last person I heard mention it was Bert Legg, the agricultural contractor. It must have been about 1980, when I was working freelance for him, that Bert instructed me and a couple of other tractor drivers about where we had to go to do a job near Upton Lovell. His directions as to where we had to go mentioned we had to find a field just past the former YB Gardens. The other tractor drivers had never heard of the YB Gardens and hadn’t a clue as to where he meant. When I said I knew where the site of the YB Gardens was, Bert suggested I go first and the others follow me.

The thing is, before the name is completely lost and forgotten, can any readers of this blog shed any light on the YB Gardens? Do you remember it? Do you know who owned it or who might have worked there? Was it a plant nursery or something else? And what did the ‘YB’ stand for? It would be good to discover what we can and make some record of it. If you have info or recollections please contact us by emailing dannyhowellnet@gmail.com Thank you.

Heytesbury Imber & Knook Parish Council Sets Its Budget

Friday 1st February 2019

Heytesbury Imber & Knook Parish Council Sets Its Budget.

At a meeting of the Heytesbury Imber & Knook Parish Council held on the 15th January 2019, members considered the budget for the next financial year. The figures were carefully reviewed, and it was agreed unanimously to set a figure of £11,817 for 2019/20. This translates to the sum of £33.84 for every Band D equivalent property, paid to the Parish Council for the year. This is a 30% increase on last year, £7.81 for the year or 65p per week.

Members of the council made the difficult decision to agree this increase after recognising that there had been no rise in the Parish budget for over ten years. Reserves have been used in previous years to balance the figures, but these have now been exhausted and to continue carrying out the statutory duties and preferred services in the Parish, an increase has become inevitable. Part of local governance regulations require the council to keep a total of three months operating expenditure retained for the financial year and this could not be met without an increase.

Councillor Anne Perry, Chairman of the Parish Council, said: “There have been some real pressures on the budget as the costs of maintaining the parish are rising all the time. The council has made this difficult decision as it needs to raise funds to put towards the cost of necessary repairs to the village play equipment, repairs to the War Memorial and maintenance of the footpaths and street furniture. In addition, since last year, to comply with General Data Protection Regulations, some software and the website require updating. The Parish Council will be able to continue the additional grass cutting, cleaning of bus shelters and repairs or replacement to litter bins that has been carried out in the last few years, to keep the Parish looking at its best, which we know is appreciated by our residents.”.
