The Bath Arms at Crockerton, circa 1900.
The very high wall, with angled sides,
at the eastern end of the building
(on the right of this photograph,
on which is a sign that reads:
“The Bath Arms, Full Licence”)
was originally a purpose-built fives court.
Fives is a game where a ball is propelled
against a wall (or 2, 3 or 4 walls), not with a
racquet but using the bare hand or gloved hand.
The fives court at the Bath Arms,
Crockerton, was later demolished.
The sign by the hedge on the right
of this photograph, reads “Tea Gardens”.
