From The Warminster Miscellany, 1 August 1862:
BRIXTON DEVERILL – For some time past various alterations and repairs have been progressing in this parish church; amongst other improvements the chancel has been enlarged, stained glass has supplanted the old and some transparent panes, and various other improvements have been carried out, in grateful remembrance of one who endeared himself to his parishioners by his faithful and self-sacrificing labours amongst them. We refer to the late Rev. W. Barnes. In this expression of affection the parishioners have been aided by personal friends of the deceased clergyman.
On Thursday the 24th ult., the completion of these renovations was celebrated by divine worship. The Venerable Archdeacon Hony preaching in the morning a very appropriate sermon from St. John iv. 23 and 24; and in the evening the Rev. W.D. Morrice, Rural Dean, delivered a very impressive sermon from 1 Kings viii. 28 and 29.
After the morning service a large number of friends and neighbours partook of the hospitality of the esteemed Rector, the Rev. E. Strickland.
In the afternoon the younger people & children amused themselves with various games &c., the latter were amply regaled with tea and cake; whilst after the evening service the poorer parishioners and their wives sat down to an ample supper laid out in a commodius barn.
The day proved one of unalloyed pleasure, and will long be a bright spot in the memory of those who participated in its engagements.
