Mr. A. Andrews writes:
“Have other people in Warminster got fed up, like me, with the questions asked by staff in W.H. Smith [the branch at Three Horseshoes Walk, Warminster]. For some while I have always got my regular newspaper there. The newspaper is all I ever buy there. I don’t buy their stationery or greeting cards as I find their prices more expensive than other shops. And I have no interest in books by celebrities. But every time I take my newspaper to the counter to pay for it, the W.H. Smith shop assistant always asks me what else I would like to buy, for example: “Would you like any sweets or chocolate today?” The answer is always “No!” If I wanted sweets and or chocolate I would have made my selection and taken it to the counter to pay. I don’t want to be asked or pressurised into buying something I don’t want. I don’t blame the shop assistants – because I guess they are told by the manager or someone in charge to ask the customers every time. I guess, in these recessionary times, that senior management want to try and squeeze every pound they can out of every customer. But in this case, the need to get more money out of customers’ pockets has backfired, because I am so fed up with being asked what else I want to buy that I have decided to buy my newspaper elsewhere. I just wanted to let know whoever is behind this initiative at W.H. Smith that they have lost me as a customer. Thank you for letting me get this matter off my chest.”
