The Schools In Christ Church Parish, Warminster

In Christ Church, Warminster, The First 150 Years, a booklet published in October 1980, to celebrate the 150th birthday of Christ Church, the Rev. John C. Day (Vicar) wrote:

The Schools Of The Parish [Christ Church]

The church in 1831. Sambourne Workhouse in 1836. The first school in 1835. Three important milestones in the transformation of the small hamlet of Sambourne and the huddle of cottages on the Common into the thriving parish of today.

In 1831 when Christ Church was built, no places of education existed in the parish. Within a space of forty years there were no less than four schools, all built through the inspiration of Christian people and which were to have a great influence for good on the lives of the people.

Given that the parish is much bigger than it was when four schools flourished, we conclude that families do not have so many children today and that the area population has aged attracting numbers of retired folk who enjoy the mixture of town and countryside to be found within minutes of their homes.
