“I Can Help And I Will Help”

Sunday 5th January 2025

Kate Mairis at Yarn For The Soul, 6 Street, Warminster, writes:

My heart feels so very heavy tonight after news of a few deaths over the weekend. I know that sat in my little corner here in Warminster there’s not a huge amount I can realistically do . . . BUT that does not mean I am going to sit here and do nothing. My shop is a safe place. You are always welcome here – yes you…. I will always make the time to listen. I always have a warm kettle and I’m told my hugs are quite good too. What I’m trying to say is that even if this reaches just one person feeling low, downtrodden and a bit crap then that’s a good thing. My shop is not just for women. Men are just as welcome here. If you feel like you have nowhere to go, please think again. I don’t have a magic wand. I can’t take your burden away but I can listen and I can point you in the direction of finding professional help. I can help and I will help. You are loved. Always. Katie xx

Marcus Matthews 50th Birthday

In The Deverills & Crockerton Parish News, April 2023, Richard Baxter writes:

Marcus Matthews at 50. There was a large gathering of family and friends at Longbridge Deverill Hall to celebrate Marcus Matthews’ 50th birthday. Wonderfully organised by Marcus, with help from cousin Wendy Hodgson, we enjoyed delicious food and drinks and chocolate birthday cake. Guests came from far and wide, including Cornwall and France.

Marcus has lived all his life in Crockerton, he is best known for magazine articles and a book on his specialist subject of Big Cats. His father, General Mark Matthews, lived at Thornhill for some years and is fondly remembered as a MFH by the South & West Wilts Hunt. Marcus’s mother, Heather’s maiden name was Shackleton, making Marcus second cousin three times removed of great polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.

Writing Lives: Wilfred Middlebrook

2022

The start of 1940 saw the arrival of evacuees into the town of Warminster. Wilfred accommodated and helped many evacuees travelling to and from the town. He reflects on a girl called Vera Simmons–a 12 year old from North Woolwich– who forty four years later, Wilfred remains “close friends’ with (p.22). Wilfred’s duties as an air raids warden included “fitting the population of Warminster with gas masks’ (p.17); tending and answering the worries of those in the town and being trained in “first aid’ (p.20).
