From the Warminster United Church magazine, December 2015:
June Laird
We were sad to hear that June died on 20th October. Although she had not been able to attend church for many months she was still very much in our thoughts and prayers.
June was active in the church as long as she was able. She was a very dedicated Church pastoral visitor, regularly going to visit people. She often walked up to Henford House on visits, even after walking had begun to be a challenge. (Not many years ago she was a member of Warminster Walking group but gradually her mobility deteriorated).
When the church needed a new elder June went home and prayed and decided to offer her services. No one had thought to ask her because she was too modest to speak or read the Bible during services, but her simple act of service was deeply appreciated.
She was a Christian Aid organiser for our church, for two years, arranging a cheese lunch, coffee mornings and house to house collections.
June may have appeared to many of us as a quiet, timid person so the story we heard at her funeral of her travels – hitch hiking across Europe – in her younger days came as rather a surprise!
June was a member of the friendship club. Margaret Edwards used to pick her up and Margaret says a great deal in these words: “She was always ready for me, always cheerful and smiling, never moaning about her problems. She loved coming and sharing with us, and we miss her.”

John Loftus, who was a prominent businessman in Warminster and an avid supporter of Warminster Town Football Club, has died, following a short battle with cancer. He passed away at his home in France on Monday 24th August 2015, the day after his 70th birthday.
John was born in Dundalk, Ireland, on 23rd August 1945. In his teenage years he moved with his parents, brother and three sisters, to Luton, where he was spotted by Luton Town Football Club. His footballing career was cut short when he had a serious motorcycle accident. He then joined the Army and travelled the world for 23 years.
While visiting Norway in 1969 he met Solveig and they married that same year. They had two sons: Ingar, born in 1971, and Jan, born in 1972. The family came to Warminster, where in September 1985, John set up his own business, called South Western Properties, at Silver Street. He later transferred the business to nearby George Street and renamed it the John Loftus Property Centre.
John’s passion for football remained with him all his life. He was a football referee for 45 years. He served as both secretary and treasurer of Warminster Town Football Club. He wrote match reports for publication in local newspapers.
John’s other great interest was country music. He was not only a presenter on Warminster Community Radio (WCR) but also the station’s most generous patron. He donated £4,000 on an annual basis, for many years, to WCR to ensure its continued survival.
John was also involved with the founding of two Warminster based charities, including the Imperial Charity with David McCance.
John’s wife Solveig died in 2004. John married again, to Sylviane and they took up residence in France.
John’s youngest son Jan said: “My father was easy to talk to and easy to approach. He would go out of his way to help anyone. He always wanted to help people.”
The funeral of John Loftus was held at St. George’s RC Church, Boreham Road, Warminster, on Friday 4th September 2015. Donations in memory of John were made to the Imperial Charity. Studio One at Warminster Community Radio, where John presented many programmes, is to be named the John Loftus Studio, as a dedication to him by his radio colleagues.
