Why Is A Man From Hampshire Recorded On The War Memorial At St. John’s Church, Warminster?

Hi Danny,
I have often wondered about the name Holly Cooper on the WW1 memorial in St John’s Church, Warminster, as it sounds like a woman which would be unusual. I can’t find anybody listed other than a George Holly Cooper who was in the navy.  He was born in Hampshire and I am not sure how he could come to be in Warminster. Have you  any information?

Danny Howell replies:

Hello Sheelagh,

Re: George Holly Cooper.

Yes he was in the Navy and he was from Hampshire – born at Broughton in 1885.

His naval career lists him at various times as a stoker and a petty officer, and as a mechanician when he died.

His official number was 300648 (Po).

He served on HMS Invincible and died on 31st May 1916. He was buried at sea.

He certainly had a Warminster connection.

He married Mildred Alvina Doel at St. John’s Church, Boreham, Warminster, on 1st July 1911.

George Holly Cooper was then aged 26 and he gave his occupation as a stoker in His Majesty’s Navy.

His bride was aged 27, and was the daughter of a gardener called John Doel who lived at East Street.

George Holly Cooper and Mildred Alvina Doel gave their addresses on the marriage certificate as Boreham, Warminster.

At the time of the 1921 Census Mildred is living at 40 Hollam Road, Milton (Southsea area of Portsmouth – another naval place).

I presume on marriage Mildred went to live near naval ports, with George away serving.

The 1921 Census records she has an 8 year old daughter called Kathleen Joan Holly Cooper (she was born at Gillingham, Kent – another naval place I presume).

As far as I know Mildred Alvina Cooper died in 1957. Her death was registered in Warminster.

Hope this solves why a man born in Hampshire is recorded on the war memorial at St. John’s Church, Warminster.

Regards, Danny.

Warminster Man Sentenced To More Than Two Years For Domestic Abuse Offences

Monday 7th October 2024

From the news page of Wiltshire Police:

Owen Coombs

A man from Warminster has been sentenced to two years and four months for domestic abuse offences.

Owen Coombs, 23, of Kings Court, Warminster, was sentenced at Swindon Magistrates Court on Thursday (03/10) for engaging in controlling / coercive behaviour, assault, ABH and possession of a class B drug.

On August 26, 2024, Coomb’s victim reported a theft following a verbal argument. He grabbed her through a window and punched her in the face.

He was sentenced to two years in prison for coercive and control, four months imprisonment for ABH (to run consecutively), 1 month for battery (to run concurrently), and was given a 5 year restraining order.

Coombs was not given a separate penalty for possession.

Local Crime Investigator Amanda Southey said: “Coercive control has a significant impact on a person and often causes long-term adverse effects on their emotional well-being. This can make it harder for a victim to come forward and I would like to thank the victim for their bravery in assisting our investigation.

“Coombs subjected his victim to a series of abusive acts and without the victim coming forward and reporting these incidents to the police, we would have found it difficult to secure the sentence.

“No one should have to undergo any form of physical violence and as a Force, we are here to listen to you and are committed to providing the necessary support to help bring you justice.

“You should never feel alone in such circumstances and in making contact with us, you are doing the right thing.”

Sutton Veny Link With Mary Poppins

Saturday 13th April 2024

Danny Howell writes:

Terry Cross (born 1942), who lived lastly at The Teasels, Warminster, told me a few years ago of an interesting chance encounter he had. Terry related to me that on a trip to London (he didn’t say when) he did his usual thing of going into bars and pubs, talking to people. He recalled how in a pub (he didn’t name it) he got talking to a man who was about three years older than him. The man asked Terry where he come from. Terry’s response was “I’m from Wiltshire, but you won’t have heard of the village where I grew up.” The man said: “Tell me, I might know it.” Terry replied: “I doubt you will know it.” The man said: “Tell me anyway.” Terry responded: “Sutton Veny.” Terry parents Fred and Vera (Alfred Cross and Vera Cross, nee Davis, married in 1941) had lived at High Street, Sutton Veny.

To Terry’s amazement the man said: “Oh I know it. I have good memories of it. My mother used to visit there for short holidays and during her stay she would call on people in the afternoons and have tea with them, during which time I was left to occupy myself in other ways. I would wander on my own about the village, looking over garden fences and walls, walking the lanes, making discoveries in hedgerows, and exploring the fields and the woods.”

It turned out that the man Terry met in the pub was Camillus Travers, and his mother was P.L. Travers, the author of the Mary Poppins books. Camillus, born on 15th August 1939, was one of three sons born to Nathaniel Marlow Hone and Bridget Anthony. His birth name was John Camillus Hone and he had a twin brother called Anthony Hone. (The other brother was Joseph Hone, born in 1937). Pamela Lyndon Travers (born Helen Lyndon Goff, 9th August 1899, Maryborough, Queensland, Australia) when she was 40, went to Ireland and adopted Camillus. She said it was on the advice of her Californian astrologer that she only adopted Camillus and not also his twin brother Anthony. Camillus was unaware of his parentage and real family until he was 17, when his twin brother Anthony unexpectedly met him in a bar in London. Anthony had been brought up by his grandparents.

Pamela died in 1996. Camillus died in November 2011.

Terry Cross died on Wednesday 28th July 2021.

I suppose a logical question for readers of this blog/website is who was Pamela Lyndon Travers calling on and having tea with in Sutton Veny? Does anyone know? Anyone with information please email dannyhowellnet@gmail.com
