Thursday 4th September 2014

At this time of year, ivy in bloom,
such as this on the western edge of
Knapp Farm Wood, forming part
of the hedgerow with Top Park, Bishopstrow,
is an important nectar source for bees.

Silver Poplar At Norton Bavant Indicating Rain

Sunday 3rd August 2014

A silver poplar in the north-west corner
of the Railway Field at South Farm,
Norton Bavant.

A sudden increase in humidity,
usually preceding a storm,
often causes the leaves of poplar trees
(and maples too) to turn their
silvery-colour backs upwards in the wind,
a good indicator that heavy rain is imminent.

The flipping upward of the backs of the leaves
happens when the humidity
causes limpness of the soft stems.
