Where Was Jacob’s Ladder?

Saturday 30th August 2925

Danny Howell writes:
Jacob’s Ladder
Arthur Shuttlewood, in one of his books – Warnings From Flying Friends – Flying Saucer Revelations, published by Portway Press in 1968, mentions that at Botany Farm, Warminster, was a feature known as Jacob’s Ladder. Has anyone else heard of this Jacob’s Ladder? What sort of feature was it? Maybe it was some steps climbing a slope? Does it still exist? Where exactly was/is it? If you have any information about this, please let us know.

David J. Jones has responded:
“Around this area is what I’ve know as Jacob’s ladder.”

Which suggests it is one of the steep paths in the Botany Hanging woodland.

The Little Dairy Has Closed

Friday 15th August 2025

A message from Stuart Legg, owner of the Little Dairy at Home Farm, Boreham, Warminster:

“It’s with a heavy heart that we’ve decided to close the milk vending machine. We poured our hearts into this little dairy, but unfortunately, despite all our hard work, the sales just weren’t enough to keep it going. With the machine now broken and a large repair bill looming, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to stop.”

“We want to thank every single one of you who supported us on this journey. Your enthusiasm for our milk meant the world to us. While this chapter is closing, we want to assure you that our commitment to sustainable farming hasn’t changed. We’ll continue to look after our land and our cows in the most environmentally friendly way we can.”

Joe Dufosee writes:

PLEASE SHARE!
Last night our Prattley sheep handling system was stolen from the Warminster, Wiltshire area. It’s fairly old with a brand new winch, so quite unique. I don’t expect to see it again but if people can share this we might make it too hot to handle!

Royal Artillery Hunt Met On Chitterne Green Before Accessing Codford Down

December 2024

From the Instagram page of Salisbury Plain Hunt Sabs (Moonrakers):

“Royal Artillery Hunt, Boxing Day, Chitterne Village Green.
Sabs positioned themselves 100 yards from the gathering on Chitterne green. No pretence the RAH were donating their collection of cash from the Curious and the Bloodthirsty to Charity on this occasion. These ill-gotten gains would be heading straight into the pockets of the RAH OCG themselves. Huntsman Charles Carter, 10 hound couples and 15 riders were looking worse for wear from quaffing large volumes of red brown liquid we could only assume was alcohol. Retired Major “Disaster” Johnny “Halfwit” Hatherway-White, plastic Stirrup picnic cup fixed firmly in hand piped up with a bigoted speech. Unfortunately, Halfwit had plucked up more liquid courage than was good for him. Losing inhibition and all self respect he proceeded to defame Kier Starmer, John Healy and all Antis for spoiling the RAH pastime of killing foxes and terrifying wildlife on Salisbury Plain. Undeterred by his inebriated state, Johnny Halfwit’s lamentation blamed everyone but the hunt themselves for the MOD suspension of hunting licences. Halfwit neglected to mention that both Carter and kennel man Simon “Shakey” Hands have Criminal Resolution Orders for attacking females and stealing property; nor that not one RAH hunt staff or member fulfil requirements by being serving military. As if the crown hadn’t spotted us already, Johnny Halfwit inflated by his own ego indicated to one of our Sabs and declaring by name proceeded to blame our Sab personally for the hunts bad luck. With Halfwits deluded ranting more tedious by the second, Carter interrupted Halfwit with a toot on his signalling he was off to block the public highway. The pathetically small field trailed behind hounds onto the B390 then rode onto a public footpath and used it to access the Codford Down. Heavily impeded and unable to follow on this occasion We cannot say if any foxes were killed today.”

Bishopstrow Free Range Egg Shed – Organic Eggs Update

Monday 9th December 2024

Organic eggs update from Bishopstrow Free Range Egg Shed:

Hi all

Regrettably we have taken the decision to stop stocking our organic eggs in the brown egg shed. The brown shed will now be dedicated to jumbo eggs when we have some.

Good news – despite us taking this decision we are happy to take pre orders for organic eggs that we can fulfil through face to face sales leading up to Christmas. To keep it simple (and to keep our prices down) the minimum order will be a tray of 30 eggs (£10). When you collect your eggs they will be available on their lay date meaning you have a month to use your eggs.

For anyone wishing to order some organic eggs leading up to Christmas please drop us a direct message detailing how many trays you would like.

Proposed collection dates/times as follows (however depending on the level of interest we could consider other slots). Collection will be from the egg sheds.

– Thursday 12th December (between 8am and 9am or 4-5pm)

– Monday 23rd December (between 12noon and 1pm or 4-5pm)

Thank you everyone.

Phaase Horse Sanctuary Seeking Land To Rent In The Warminster Area

Friday 22nd November 2024

A message from the Phaase Horse Sanctuary:

We have secured temporary land until the spring which we are all incredibly relieved about.

But we will still be needing to secure land to rent LONG TERM from spring for our old boys so please keep sharing and please contact us with any info!

Thank you so much for all your support, we have been blown away by the response.

We are urgently looking for land to rent by 30th November for 5 of our horses due to being served 1 weeks notice to vacate the land they are grazed on.

Teddy, Pickles, Tibbett, Sprite and Zaream are a very loveable bunch of geldings. They are all older rescue horses from various pasts, including marriage breakups, abuse and severe injuries.

They are hardy boys that live out 24/7 and are tended to and loved by our founder Dee and her dedicated team of 14 volunteers, who are all worried about our boys in this difficult situation.

Please spread the word. If you know of any suitable land for long term rent in the Warminster area, please get in contact with us ASAP.

Teddy, our 24 year old Thoroughbred who started his life in the USA and came to the UK to race before retiring and eventually coming to us as a last resort following a marriage break up.

Pickles is a very cheeky Thoroughbred in his mid 20s. He has been with us for a number of years following an accident with a car that led to serious anxieties and Kissing Spine. He is the class clown of the herd and it is impossible to not have a sweet spot for him.

Zaream is the newest member of our herd of bachelors. He is an Arabian horse and a very sweet boy all round who even comes when called. He came from a neglectful situation before being rescued 10 years ago. We are now supporting him in his golden years.

Conference: White Horses, Badges & Giants, Hill Figures Of Southern England

Monday 7th October 2024

Conference: White Horses, Badges & Giants: Hill figures of Southern England.

Hill figures are large iconic archaeological monuments, principally concentrated in southern England (and on the chalk). Their archaeological study (and appreciation) is perhaps tardy in comparison with other archaeologist’s sites, and earthwork monuments.

Recently, ground-breaking research, fieldwork and analysis on these monuments in Wiltshire has been undertaken by Garry Gibbons and Brian Edwards, and excavations and dating of three of the most famous monuments (Uffington White Horse, Wilmington Long Man, and the Cerne Giant) has revolutionised our understanding.

This Conference, with a wide range of experts, will introduce us to hill figures, new research, new results and new ideas, and showcases what we now know about hill figures and points new directions for their study.
