Our new postmaster, Sergeant-Major Hirst, of Bugley, Warminster, will enter upon his duties early in this month, and we are very pleased to be able to add that satisfactory arrangements are in the course of being made through the District Council to give the necessary guarantee required by the post office authorities for bringing the telegraph wires to our village.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Cuckoo’s Nest was the name for two cottages at Pickford’s Lane, off the north side of West Street, Warminster.
The 1901 Census of Warminster records that Frank Humphries who lived at No.1 Cuckoo’s Nest and Ernest Morrell who lived at No.2 Cuckoo’s Nest were both nurseryman labourers.
The 1901 Census tells us that Frank Humphries, was then aged 33 and that he was born in Warminster. His wife Ellen, three years younger, was born in Frome. The Census records seven Humphries’ children living with them: Albert, aged 13, a baker’s errand boy; Charles, aged 9; Nellie, aged 7; Arthur, aged 6; Mary A., aged 4; Florence, aged 2; and William, aged 1. These children were all born in Warminster.
Ernest Morrell, who lived at No.2 Cuckoo’s Nest, was aged 24 at the time of the 1901 Census and his birthplace is recorded as Taunton, Somerset. His wife Lily Morrell is the same age and was born in Warminster. The Census reveals they had two children at this time: George, aged 3, born in Taunton; and Frank, aged 1, born in Warminster.

A promotional flyer, attracting tourists to
Stourton Tower (Alfred’s Tower)
on the Stourhead Estate,
in South West Wiltshire,
circa the 1890s. The text reads:
“Stourton Tower. It’s situated two miles
from the Mansion of Stourhead, the seat
of Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare,
Bart., which has been fitly called one of
the wonders of the West of England.
The Tower, is a triangular building of
red brick, 150 feet high, occupying a
magnificent point of view, called
Kingsettle, a lofty greensward hill, 500
feet above the sea. Within sight of this
Tower is the spot where stood the
cowherd’s hut, where King Alfred took
refuge after one of his defeats by the
Danes, and in which the incident
of the burning cakes occurred,
which is so dear to all children.
The Tower was erected about the year
1766 by Henry Hoare, Esq.,
founder of the London Banking House,
and ancestor of the present proprietor,
in memory of Alfred the Great (A.D. 879),
who, on this summit, erected his
standard against Danish invaders.
To him we owe the origin of Juries,
the establishment of a Militia,
and the creation of a Naval Force.
Alfred, the light of a benighted age,
was a philosopher and a Christian,
the father of his people, and the founder
of the English monarchy and liberty.”
