From the “Around The District” section of The West Wiltshire Guide 1978:
Shaftesbury is the ancient “Palladour” and also the “Shaston” of Hardy’s novels. It is worth visiting for the vistas of the surrounding countryside.
From The West Wiltshire District Guide 1978:
The Woodland Park near Westbury offers a place where visitors can enjoy themselves wandering at will in an unspoilt and natural woodland setting.
The woods cover some 120 acres and comprises two main blocks. Round Wood on the south side of the Southwick-Rudge road and the High and Hazel Woods to the north of the road. The latter constitutes the Woodland Park which was opened to the public in March 1968.
Eight walks have been cut through the woods and each visitor is given a free leaflet detailing these walks which vary in length from about half a mile.
A particularly fascinating feature is the 4½ acre lake with a man-made island on which wild birds nest in safety. Wild birds in increasing numbers are coming to the lake, including heron, kingfisher, mallard, dabchick, moorhen, coot and even a great crested grebe, together with numbers of other ducks and geese which were put on the lake at the outset.
The lake has been stocked with coarse fish and the “casual” angler can enjoy a day’s fishing with more than a sporting chance of a good catch because no more than five rods are permitted at any one time.
The Museum
A more recent development has been the addition of the Phillips Countyside Museum of natural history and forestry, which is situated adjoining the lake and is open the same hours as the Park. This building was constructed in 1970 with a view to linking the forest with a centre where visitors can come and learn about the bird, plant and animal life. The Museum is administered by trustees as a non-profit making educational trust. It holds lectures, etc., all the year on various natural history and forestry projects. Further particulars of these can be obtained by calling at or telephoning the Park Office (Westbury 822238).
