The Passing Of Chris Bell

Friday 29th August 2025

A message from Warminster Rugby Club:

It is with great sadness that the Club has to announce the passing of Chris Bell, ex-chairman of both sections of the Club and up until recently Club President.

Chris was instrumental in the founding of the Club back in 1977 and after that was the driving force behind establishing, maintaining and developing Minis and Youth rugby within the Club.

Over the years nobody has worked harder to promote rugby and the Warminster Rugby Club in the town and he will be sorely missed. Our sincere condolences go out to his family. His funeral will take place at the Minster Church at 2pm on Thursday 11th Sept 2025, with the wake afterwards at the Rugby Club.

Warminster Town Council Approves Funding To Warminster Rugby Club

Thursday 16th January 2025

Press release from Warminster Town Council:

Warminster Town Council Approves Funding To Warminster Rugby Club.

Warminster Town Council has awarded £22,500 to Warminster Rugby Football Club (RFC) for the purchase of new tower lights and a second-hand generator, with money coming from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).

Recent bad weather had severely damaged the previous tower lights leaving Warminster RFC with limited training options.

The investment will help grow the popular club in Folly Lane – allowing further training sessions for both the youth and women’s team, allowing them to train any day or evening of the week.

The Club will continue to host other events including Warminster Archers, Warminster Bridge club, children’s jungle gym and baby sensory sessions.

The decision was made by councillors at a Full Council meeting on Monday 13th January.

Cllr Steve Jeffries said: “I am delighted that the town council has voted to support Warminster Rugby Club.

“This essential funding, which will purchase a generator and additional mobile flood lights, will enable the club to offer more training sessions to the youth and women’s teams, and make better use of all the facilities available at the club rather than overusing the pitch with the current limited floodlights.”

CIL is a planning charge payable by developers on any new development. The Warminster Town Council policy is that its share of the CIL should be spent on investment in the public realm and public facilities that support the community.

Warminster Rugby Club will report back to the Warminster Town Council on completion of the project.

Fore Street Playing Field To Be Rented To Warminster Rugby Club?

From Focus, 5, the newsletter of Warminster Liberal Party, published November 1989:

Comment
The Council are at it again. Doctor Alcock’s Recreation Ground was created in 1912. The Council in 1950 built Alcock Crest on it, so to replace it the Council created the Fore Street Playing Field which was called Frank Moody’s Field – on land given by the granddaughters and was ‘dedicated forever as a children’s pleasure ground’.

So, the Council let it run down, removed the goalposts, marked out a rugby pitch and are going to rent it to the Rugby Club for its senior team.

Surely the Council should not be charging for recreational facilities and should be supplying proper facilities for the children at Fore Street and a proper rugby facility elsewhere.

Or are their bad policy decisions of the past about greenfield sites coming home to roost? It is a shame that we never seem to know what is going on until the workmen actually turn up to do the job.
