New Streetpod bike storage facilities have been installed outside Warminster Library (Three Horseshoes Walk, Warminster, BA12 9BT) following a Warminster Town Council upgrade.

The new user-friendly parking is now available to use for up to six bikes – the new pods offer increased protection and aim to encourage more cycling across Warminster.

The Climate Strategy Working Group previously identified cycling to the town centre would reduce carbon emissions.

A public consultation was conducted to gather feedback on cycling habits and parking needs with respondents highlighting concerns over the security of bicycle racks.

The new units are Certified Secure Diamond, the highest level of UK bicycle security standard, endorsed by police and allow secure locking of the frame and both wheels with a single lock.

Cllr Jack Jones said: “Upgrading the bike racks outside the town centre library to brand new Streetpod units reflects our commitment to encouraging active travel and improving local infrastructure.

“These modern, secure pods offer better protection for bikes, promote sustainable transport, and support our community’s shift towards a greener, healthier future.”

The new units have replaced the existing Sheffield stand racks and are ready to use with funding coming from Ear Marked Reserve Climate Change.

The Black Canon Collective

Tuesday 25th April 2023

From the Black Canon Collective website:

About The Black Canon Collective
The Black Canon Collective (BCC) is a local mountain bike (MTB) club based around Longleat forest, and is run by local mountain bikers. The purpose of the club is to support and develop the local MTB and cycling community as a whole.

The club runs many rides, events, low-fi races, trail maintenance activities, fund raisers and the all important socials. We no longer license land from The Longleat Estate, so you don’t need our permission to ride things. The land formerly known as The Allotment is now managed by B1ke.

The club was formed in spring 2008. We’re named after the Black Canons (monks) who first settled on the site where Longleat House was later built. The BCC is a non profit making organisation. All funds are used to support and stimulate local cycling activities.

The club is affiliated to national cycling body British Cycling and is constituted accordingly. Run by a formal committee, each role is fulfilled by means of an open vote.

Committee
Alastair Mackinlay – Chairman.
Rich Cory – Secretary.
Paul Gunstone – Treasurer.
Sean Watson.

Membership
We don’t really do membership anymore. Since we no longer run The Allotment there isn’t anything to pay for, so ride free! Basically just rock up and ride. Its fun, nothing more.

A History Of The Black Canon Collective

Tuesday 25th April 2023

From the Black Canon Collective website:

The Black Canon Collective is a local mountain bike club based around Longleat forest.

On 23rd February 2008 the unofficial mountain bike trails at Longleat woods were closed down by the Longleat estate. This was a massive blow to local MTB community, many of whom had been involved from its creation back in the late 90’s.

Rather than mope about, people rallied together; a club was formed, a committee elected and negotiations with the land owner entered into. Through the hard work of the committee, and many others, the club secured a licence to the land ensuring its future as a local mountain bike facility.

Here are some words from the club founder and first Chairman, Andrew Denham, that explain a little more about how things first came about:

Since the late 90’s I, and many others, have collectively spent hundreds of man hours dreaming, planning, raking, digging, cutting, and building trails at that magical spot in Longleat woods. To what affect? Well, aside from blunt axes, broken spades and bad backs we had created a place to ride. We loved the place; every course, every section, every feature they all had memories associated with either building or riding them.

On Saturday Feb 23rd 2008 the Longleat estate sent some forest wardens down to the trails to wait for any riders that might turn up. Sure enough Ian Crook and I arrived to spend a day repairing the existing trails and building some new sections, as we approached we were told of its immediate closure and politely asked to leave. We were all devastated.

We contacted the Longleat estate to ask if we could negotiate; to our surprise the answer was yes! Paul Grugeon, Dept Land Agent for the estate, agreed to meet me and discuss the future of the spot. His terms were simple; we must set up a club which must indemnify the land owner, pay a licensing fee, and provide an adequate site management plan. So that’s what we did!

On Thursday 15th May 2008 the area that we’ve loved for almost a decade (now called The Allotment) came under the control of the Black Canon Collective. This has only been possible due to the sheer enthusiasm and hard work of the many people involved since that sad day in Feb.

In the summer of 2014 the club took the difficult decision to no longer license and operate The Allotment. Due to management difficulties, no-one being able to step forward to manage the site, the club formally informed The Longleat Estate that it would not be renewing the land license.

Although born from the remains of some wild DH trails, the Black Canon Collective is a mountain bike club in it’s broadest sense, actively supporting and providing for all mountain bike disciplines.
