Photograph Showing The Dining Room/Sandwiches Room At The Avenue Primary School, Warminster

Photograph taken in 1995, of the view south-west from the footbridge at Warminster Railway Station.

On the left is the Baden Powell Scout Hut. Adjacent is a building (black sides, white doors and windows, and a grey roof) in the north east corner of the grounds of the Avenue Primary School.
This particular building was the dining room/sandwiches room at the Avenue School, where children ate their sandwiches.

The building burnt down in a fire (started accidentally)
circa 1997.

In the background can be seen the drill tower at Warminster Fire Station.

The Avenue School, Warminster

Danny Howell writes:

The Avenue School, The Avenue, Warminster

The Avenue School was built in 1931 and was the first new school to be built in Warminster for over a century. Harold Nelson Dewey, who had previously been the headmaster of the Close School became the headmaster of the Avenue School from the time it opened until his retirement from teaching in 1953.

When Kingdown Secondary Modern School (now Kingdown Comprehensive School) opened in June 1960 it had already become outgrown by the increase in population of Warminster, so the Avenue School was used as an annexe for Kingdown until Kingdown was enlarged in 1968. The Avenue School then became a primary school for younger pupils.

Bowls Barrow Bustard Given By Tom Silcox To Harold Nelson Dewey

From a list of items in Harold Nelson Dewey’s diaries 1919-1947 (list made by Percy Trollope):

Friday 17th February 1933 (uncertainty about this date – needs checking?)

Mr. Tom Silcox, Avenue School teacher, gave Mr. H.N. Dewey, the Great Bustard shot at Bowles Barrow circa 1867.”

Percy Trollope remarks that this bustard is now in the Dewey Museum.
