Recording An Alternative History Of Warminster

Saturday 13th September 2025

At dannyhowell net we don’t always go for the obvious when it comes to preserving photographs of Warminster. Here’s a prime example of an unusual view but it does show something that might have otherwise gone unrecorded.

It’s a photograph taken in 1995, of the view south-west from the footbridge at Warminster Railway Station. On the left is the Baden Powell Scout Hut. Adjacent is a building (black sides, white doors and windows, and a grey roof) in the north east corner of the grounds of the Avenue Primary School.

This particular building I’m told was the dining room/ sandwiches room at the Avenue School, where children ate their lunchtime sandwiches. The building burnt down in a fire (started accidentally) circa 1997. In the background can be seen the drill tower at Warminster Fire Station.

I suppose the questions we should be asking about this pic are: Did you attend the Avenue School during the 1980s and early 1990s up to 1997 and if so did you eat sandwiches in the building pictured? What was in your favourite sandwiches? Who prepared the sandwiches? Who were the “dinner ladies”? You get the gist, we’re trying to record an alternative history – the nitty gritty – of our hometown and what really went on.

Warminster Town Council Funding For Tree Planting By Avenue Primary School Pupils In The Lake Pleasure Grounds

Monday 20th April 2015

From Warminster Town Council Annual Report 2014 – 2015:

The Avenue School has been granted match funding of £200 from the Council towards planting oak, sycamore, willow and birch trees in the town park. The trees represent the school’s house names and the school would like to publicise their activities to the town’s residents. It is hoped that planting can begin in the autumn and permission has been granted by Wiltshire Council, the current owners of the park.

Avenue Primary School, Warminster, To Get Match Funding From Warminster Town Council For Planting Oaks, Sycamores, Willows And Birch Trees At The Lake Pleasure Grounds (The Town Park) And Near The School Itself

Tuesday 24th March 2015

Some of the pupils from the Avenue Primary School, Warminster, attended the Town Development Committee meeting of Warminster Town Council at the Civic Centre on Monday 23rd March to update the Council on their plans to plant trees to represent the school’s house names. Ellie Morgan, Mollie Savea, Libby Leeson and Phoebe Craig explained how the school had approached the Town Council in March 2014 asking for help with funding to plant oak, sycamore, willow and birch trees within the community. The Town Council had agreed to match fund whatever the school were able to raise, up to the value of £500.

The school had managed to raise £200 for their project, and the children asked the Town Council to match this sum. They suggested the Lake Pleasure Grounds (the town park) would be the ideal place to plant the trees, and they could be used as a meeting place for special occasions such as award ceremonies.

The children’s teacher, Ms Louise Kilminster, asked whether the Council would be able to help with the next steps for finding the most appropriate place to plant them.

Councillor Jamie Cullen said: “The Council will be delighted to honour its pledge to support the Avenue School in this project and will guide the school on where to plant and help obtain planning permission.” Councillor Andrew Davis felt that planting in the park was an excellent idea as some trees had been lost in the park, so this would aid with regeneration. Some trees could also be planted near the Avenue School.

Councillor Sue Fraser congratulated the children on their fundraising efforts, and suggested that plaques should be placed by the trees to identify where they were from.

The Town Clerk, Heather Abernethie, was asked to submit the necessary paperwork to Wiltshire Council on behalf of the school.
