Crop Thinning At Warminster Community Orchard

22nd July 2025

From the Facebook page of Warminster Community Orchard:

The trees on the Orchard have now had a thinning of their crops. The ones we could reach! To start with, it is about looking at the tree to see what is going on. We all felt we were discarding a shocking amount of fruit but this is necessary in several ways: quality over quantity for the yield, it prevents branches breaking with the weight and it also evens out the productivity of the trees so that it is less extreme – avoiding the fallow one year, excess the next pattern. The final phase of summer tasks is to lightly prune side growths and allow light to get into the trees. I do think they were thanking us.

Warminster Town Council has taken further steps to welcome visitors to the town as they continue to make Warminster a place to be proud of.

Two new “Welcome to Warminster’ planters have been installed with students from Kingdown School helping to fill them with beautiful flowers.

The new planters strengthen the town council’s commitment to making Warminster an attractive place for visitors and residents, complementing the recent installation of more than 80 hanging baskets around the town.

The new planters – which are situated at the entrance to Market Place – will also act as a barrier to prevent accidental vehicle access, improving pedestrian safety and creating a more secure environment for shoppers.

Stuart Legg, Parks and Estate Manager said: “These two new planters represent another part of Warminster Town Council’s wider commitment to maintaining pride across the town. We are continuing our message of being a welcoming thriving town.”

Sarah Miller from Kingdown School added: “The young people involved in phase one of this collaboration have been absolutely excellent.

“They have worked really hard with the support of the team at the Town Parks service. They’ve weeded, scrubbed and planted.

“The planters were a real highlight and they showed great creativity and teamwork. They are an absolute credit to their families and the school community and we are very proud of them.”

Kingdown School students are currently working with members of the Warminster Town Council Grounds Team as part of a new initiative, learning new skills as well as giving back to the local community.

The partnership is set to run all year round with students working on various projects within the Lake Pleasure Grounds, Grovelands, the Warminster Community Orchard and other public spaces in the town.

Warminster Town Council has welcomed another step towards the opening of a new Lounges café bar in the town.

The Rastrello Lounge is set to open in September occupying the now empty Lloyds Bank building at 37 Market Place. The informal café bar will be open all day for breakfast, brunch and lunch, or a relaxed dinner and drinks.

Councillor Phil Keeble said: “The town council is delighted to see the old Lloyds Bank building is being brought back into use as a Loungers café bar restaurant.

“A venue such as this was near the top of the list when we asked people about what extra facilities the town could do with.

“It is encouraging to have yet another firm investing in Warminster. It will be a boost to the town centre and brings extra employment too.”

“We know that the seasonal markets have made a significant difference to footfall and sales, as have other measures supported by the town council.

“Town centres are evolving particularly due to online shopping, but the town council remains committed to supporting a vibrant mix that serves both residents of and visitors to Warminster.”

The Town Council resolved that it had no objection to the planning application at the site of the Rastrello Lounge, 37, Market Place, Warminster at a Planning Advisory Committee held on Monday 16th June 2025.

Sunday 15th June 2025

With the planned road closure of Weymouth Street over the coming days to progress construction of the storm water storage tank, I thought that I would arrange a site visit with Cllr Andrew Davis to view the extent of the works.

Wessex Water are investing of more than £1.8 million which will see an additional 407,000 litres of storage built underground within the existing car park at the northern end of Weymouth Street to help improve the quality of water in the River Were running through the town.

Having trained professionally as a civil engineer I was interested to learn more about the complexity of the problems – the size and depth of the shaft is impressive!
