Warminster Town Council To Improve Provision For Ther Hard Of Hearing At Warminster Civic Centre

Saturday 16th November 2019

Members of Warminster Town Council’s Finance and Assets Committee have agreed to a range of measures to improve facilities for the hard of hearing and other users of the Civic Centre at Sambourne Road, Warminster.

There are four elements that are being tackled to make the council more user-friendly for the hard of hearing:

• A counter loop system for the reception counter at the Civic Centre – this is to enable any hard of hearing people to be able to communicate better with staff on reception.

• A portable microphone and speaker system for use in any of the rooms. This can be used for any council or public meeting. It will also be used by users of the Civic Centre.
This will be a huge boost for those hiring rooms for meetings, because it will allow all people to hear much more clearly.

• A static hard of hearing loop – for use by users of the Arn and Copheap rooms.

• Table microphones – for small ‘working group’ type meetings where no loudspeaker is required.

A demonstration of the equipment was organised by the company Gordon Morris Ltd. for councillors and members of staff, who were highly impressed by the systems.

The advantages of introducing the proposed systems are:

• It meets statutory requirements.

• It is flexible and can be added to in the future if needs be.

• Multiple user groups will benefit.

• It is easy to use and maintain.

• It is a co-ordinated system with great flexibility.

Assistant Town Clerk Tom Dommett said: “The current provision is dated and inadequate. This decision by councillors will be widely welcomed. Estimates suggest that one in six of the UK population have a hearing loss and by 2035, about 15.6 million people in the UK will have hearing loss – that’s one in five of the population. In addition, a much-improved microphone and speaker system will make the Civic Centre more attractive to people looking for a room
to hire for a large number of people.”

Warminster Civic Centre To Acquire A Defibrillator

Wednesday 8th March 2017

Warminster Civic Centre To Acquire A Defibrillator.

Several approaches have been made to Warminster Town Council over the past year suggesting it would be beneficial for defibrillators to be installed within the town and that one should be located at Warminster Civic Centre.

Having investigated the schemes available for the Civic Centre it was decided that entering into a four-year Memorandum of Understanding with the South Western Ambulance Service (SWAS) was the preferred option as SWAS would provide full back-up service for the running of the machine and annual defibrillator awareness sessions which will be open to the community. The Finance and Assets Committee voted unanimously in favour of going ahead with this option.

The scheme will cost £1,800 plus VAT for the four-year period and Friends of Warminster Hospital have offered to make a contribution towards the cost.

The town will need approximately ten machines for a full programme of coverage. Other sites to be considered should have a high footfall, cover a wide age range, have a suitable building for the defibrillator to be installed externally and be easily available to the public. SWAS will support the Council in identifying future sites should any further installations be considered.

The Flog It programme on BBC1 tomorrow afternoon (Sunday 15th September 2013), which is presented by Paul Martin of Seend, is a repeat of the programme filmed at Warminster, when people took along their antiques and valuables to the Civic Centre, to have them valued by experts Kate Bliss and David Fletcher. The selected objects were taken to auctioneers Henry Aldridge’s salesrooms in Devizes. The programme starts at 3.30 p.m.

Flying The Flag At Warminster Civic Centre

Thursday 8th November 2012

Warminster Town Councillors have agreed to
purchase a new flag pole for
Warminster Civic Centre.
This is to replace the current pole, which has
been declared totally inaccessible. The lanyard
starts at roof height and necessitates the use
of a very long ladder before flags can be
raised or lowered. The lanyard and fittings have
also been deemed no longer fit for purpose.
Members of the Council’s Finance and Assets
Committee approved the acquisition  of a new
flagpole at a meeting held on
Monday 5th November 2012.
The Hampshire Flag Company will supply the
new pole and install it at a cost of £966.
In future, a flag will be flown on special occasions,
which the Council says will help restore civic pride.

Warminster Civic Trust ~ Town Plan ~ The Assembly Rooms / Warminster Civic Centre

Friday 1st April 2011

Warminster Civic Trust, in its newsletter, issue number 33, April 2011, referring to the Warminster Town Plan, noted ~

“The Assembly Rooms. Revisiting the recent debate on the Assembly Rooms would achieve little at this juncture. Suffice to say, potential benefit is likely to be gained from turning the building into a vibrant civic centre, and improvements to the exterior of the building will enhance the immediate environment.”
