Upper Marsh Road, Warminster

Wilfred Middlebrook, in The Changing Face Of Warminster, first written in 1960, updated in 1971, noted:

A report in December 1908 said that Upper Marsh Road, where building has been going on for the past year, had suffered from a surfeit of names. The new residents did not care for the old name of Upper Marsh, and the Urban Council favoured Christ Church Road after the alternative suggestion of Southleigh Road had failed. One objection to Southleigh was that it would be distorted into “Sowleigh,” and the name of “Eastleigh” was suggested. Finally, the name Upper Marsh Road remained but we now find “Southleigh View” being used in the new Prestbury House estate.

Since that early house-building in 1908 there has been little change on Upper Marsh Road until recent times, but now a veritable new township is developing along this road, with the council estate of Ferris Mead and the vast new housing estate of Damask Farm.
