The Warminster ‘blot on the landscape’ auction this week of a listed High Street building thought so structurally unsound that it needs permanent scaffolding to stop it collapsing has cost the previous owners over £10,000 each year.
The former shop which has St. Lawrence’s Chapel as its neighbour sold this week for £150,000 and potential bidders were warned in a note that the scaffolding unwanted eyesore in the market town costs £150 per week plus value added tax.
There is also an extra £70 monthly payment which also incurs value added tax paving permit paid to the local authority and ‘exceptional costs such as replacing the safety netting and shoring up the hoarding.
There was also a warning to the new owners from Allsops Auctioneers. ‘The Purchaser is deemed to have made their own enquiries in this regard and will be responsible for all future payments from Completion of the sale.
‘Please also note the scaffolding will need to remain in place until the Purchaser has satisfied themselves with regard to the structural integrity of the building.
‘A Structural Appraisal dated 14th March 2013 is available for inspection within the online legal pack.’
“We are all hoping as a community that this sale will now see this blot on the landscape soon consigned to history,” said Cllr. Paul Macdonald.
“We hope this financial waste of money which could be better spent restoring this building which I remember buying menswear in years ago to its former glory.”

According to a Facebook page, No.29 High Street, Warminster, BA12 9AG (the former premises of Johnsons the Cleaners) is to become a video game bar with a proposed date of April 2016 for its opening. No.29 High Street, which is currently empty, has recently been advertised to let, leasehold, for £10,650 per annum (with annual rates of £5,280). It comprises 862 sq. ft.
The Facebook page for the Extra Life Video Game Bar announces that the games bar “is where friends can socialise, drink and celebrate all things gaming related, in a retro arcade setting which appeals to all ages. The Bar will operate with two sets of opening hours to allow control over content displayed in the bar (i.e. games and their specific age rating) providing a family friendly experience 10.00 a.m. till 5.00 p.m. and then cater to our more mainstream audience 7.00 p.m. till 11.00 p.m. The Bar will also run gaming competitions for which there will be an entry fee (unless a member) and award winners and high scorers with prizes. There will also be high score long term compactions running in the background. The Extra Life Video game bar will also look to hold small events catering to various aspects of gaming culture, such as cosplay events, new release parties , and on Sundays hold our ‘Geek out’ Sundays card games, e.g pokemon/magic the gathering with the possibility of a D&D table as this is growing in popularity. Your feedback is valuable to us so we can cater for you; this will allow us to organise the events you want and get more out of your gaming experience with us. Thanks for viewing this, we are hopeful to be open by April 2016. Looking forward to seeing you there.”
